Sick Baby Elephant Rejected By His Herd Loses Interest In Life, But Then He Meets A Dog

The odds were stacked against Ellie the baby elephant surviving after he was rescued by Karen Trendler and the staff at Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage in South Africa. He had been rejected by his herd and was critically ill.

The calf had a large umbilical abscess and septicemia. As his caregivers worked around the clock to nurse him, they realized they had another challenge…he was intolerant to milk. The team battled around the clock to keep this special baby alive.

Ellie pulled through, but elephants are social animals and need friends. Ellie would need more than just his sickness healed if he was going to survive. That’s when the rescue group introduced Ellie to Duma, a German Shepherd and something miraculous happened.

Thanks to Duma, Ellie has started to get an interest in life again!
