But one heartbreaking viral photo shows an abandoned little dog left tied to a fire hydrant by her former owner. 

Thankfully, the dog is now in safe hands. The dog, a tan mixed-breed named Baby Girl, was left tied up to a yellow fire hydrant in Green Bay, Wisconsin. 

According to WFRV Local 5, the dog had a note explaining that the owners could no longer care for the dog, along with a backpack full of the dog’s treats, toys and food.

  While it’s clear the owners had their reasons and thought they were doing the responsible thing, it didn’t make it any less of a shock for Kyle Rose Engelhardt, a local woman who found the dog and shared the story on Facebook. 

She said seeing Baby Girl like this broke her heart: “Cannot believe someone could do this,” she wrote, asking if anyone recognized the abandoned dog. 

Kylie called the police and took Baby Girl to the Wisconsin Humane Society, who took the poor dog into their care and say that she is now “doing great” while in stray hold.

  While this wasn’t the most responsible way to part with a dog and many people reacted to the story with outrage, the Humane Society was more sympathetic to the owners, addressing them directly in a Facebook post: 

  First and foremost, we are so sorry you had to part with your best friend. It’s evident just how much you loved her and we can see you did your best while struggling with your own medical complications and challenges of life. We see your love in the bag you carefully packed with all of her favorite things. We see your love in the way you secured her leash so she wouldn’t get hit by a car. We see your love in the way you placed her in the middle of a neighborhood where she’d be quickly found. We see your love in how happy and healthy Baby Girl looks. And we see your love in the note you left, pleading for someone to help her when you no longer could. 

While the Humane Society points out that they allow anonymous surrenders and that they won’t let surrender fees “be a barrier,” they told the owners they were ultimately “grateful for your compassion.” 

They wrote that Baby Girl is now getting lots of attention from the staff, and that she has a “bright future ahead.” Poor Baby Girl — we’re sure she was so heartbroken and confused after being left alone like that. 

But still, it’s apparent that the owners couldn’t care for her anymore, and everything worked out okay in the end.

She lifted her head to scan the horizon, wary of bears that might be attracted to the flesh of a creature that gasped its last breath 40,000 years ago. 

In the type of discovery they have dreamed about for years, Groves and Dan Mann, both researchers at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in summer 2012 found in the thawing bank of a northern river almost the entire skeleton of a steppe bison that died during the last ice age. 

In adventurous work sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management, Mann and Groves have been boating down lonely northern rivers for 15 years looking for scattered bones of ice age mammals, always hoping to find a complete skeleton or mummy of a mammoth, horse, or American lion. 

In mid-June, on a familiar stretch of river that flows northward on Alaska’s North Slope, they rounded a river bend and saw the skull of a large bison trapped against a willow shrub. 

Upside-down skull Groves described the scene: “We were paddling downriver, battling through a nasty squall of hail and wind, thinking about our camping spot about a mile downriver,” she said. “When the hail was just breaking up, we saw the upside-down skull with the lower jaw still attached. The teeth were really white. They stood out.” 

The pair landed their inflatable canoe at the base of the 60-foot bluff. Even before they stepped out in their rubber boots, Groves spotted other bones that told her this wasn’t an ordinary site. Though this ever-changing wall had yielded many bones over the years, those were scattered remains of ice-age creatures separated by meandering river action and the crumbling and re-forming of permafrost-cemented bluffs. 

Mann said their typical discoveries resemble “Pleistocene in a blender.” “It’s really unusual to find bones that are still articulated (together),” he said. “We’ve never found anything this intact before. I think it’s really exciting when we find single lion bones.” Groves and Mann spent the next four hours carefully removing soil from the skull. When Mann lifted it out, the spread of the steppe bison’s horns was 43 inches. The record Boone and Crockett modern bison has a horn tip spread of 27 inches. 

Fairbanks expert on Pleistocene animals Dale Guthrie estimated this bison, which Mann and Groves have nicknamed “Bison Bob,” was a 12-year-old male. After stowing the skull safely in the front of their canoe, Groves and Mann camped for the night. When they returned to the site, they saw more bones sticking out of frozen bluff sediments. 

Bones of each leg were still connected by ligaments. Reddish-brown hair clung to some bones. “When I saw the fur, that’s when I really got excited,” Mann said. Transporting skull by helicopter The pair worked the bluff for the next three days, pulling up buckets of river water to thaw the pieces of their rare find. 

They ended up finding every piece of the animal’s skeleton except for a left shoulder blade. With a few hundred bison parts attracting blowflies in their camp, Mann and Groves awaited a helicopter they had called to transport the bison to somewhere safer. 

Shortly after their find, they used a satellite phone to try and contact archaeologist Mike Kunz, their longtime collaborator at the Bureau of Land Management. Kunz is interested in the ancient Paleoindians that once lived on Alaska’s North Slope and what might have caused both them and bison to disappear about 10,000 years ago. 

Bad weather kept Kunz pinned down at the archaeological site he was digging several hundred miles away, but a helicopter arrived near Mann and Groves and transported Bison Bob to a North Slope BLM camp. There, someone put the bones in a predator-proof case.

But thankfully there are people who are prepared to turn their whole world upside down to save our beautiful wildlife, in more ways than one. 

Meet animal hero Roxy Danckwerst who has been caring for sick and orphaned animals for the last two decades. Her latest addition is Moyo, a baby elephant, who has taken over the rescue center and home of Roxy. Moyo, meaning ‘of the heart,’ was found by rangers after she was left abandoned on the shores of Lake Kariba, in Zimbabwe. 

She was only a few days old when she had tried to cross a flooded river with her elephant family and got washed away. He was taken to Roxy’s rescue center in Harare called Wild is Life where he has taken to his new surroundings and follows Roxy wherever she goes. Not the most convenient living situation as Moyo weighs 123 pounds. 

Roxy has nursed and rehabilitated many baby elephants before releasing them back into the wild but Roxy will take a bit longer as he’s frightened of everything and sick too, according to Go Animals.

Animal rescuer Roxy even slept by his side every night until she gained his trust. Now the two are inseparable and he follows her everywhere, even lying next to her on the couch.

But this dog has never lost his spirit, and over the past few months has undergone an incredible recovery — and now, one year later, his new owner confirmed the good news that Buddy is “fully healed” and doing great. 

Caution: this story contains some photos that may be distressing to readers. 

Buddy first made headlines last April, after he returned home with severe burns on his face after being set on fire. 

His skin was charred, and the burning was so bad it caused his eyes to be swollen shut, making him unable to see. He also had an extension cord around his neck, apparently used to hold him down. The perpetrator of the horrific attack was later identified as a child, who confessed to setting the dog on fire but couldn’t be charged under Mississippi law, which states that no one younger than 12 can be prosecuted. 

Buddy’s injuries were so bad he had to be surrendered to the Tunica Humane Society to get proper treatment. His vets were shocked by the case, and cautioned at the time that the dog had a long road ahead, stating that his “prognosis isn’t good right now.” 

“It’s unfathomable that someone could be that evil,” Sandy Williams, director of the Tunica Humane Society told FOX 13. “Buddy was an extremely friendly, non-threatening dog. He followed the children in the area everywhere.” 

“Buddy’s vital signs are good but, as with any burn patient, this is very much the bottom of a tall mountain to be climbed,” said Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, associate professor and veterinary surgeon, told WTVA.

  Buddy was later transported to the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine to receive further treatment, and vets were impressed by his positive attitude despite everything. 

“He was in good spirits, wagging his tail and very co-operative,” the Humane Society wrote in an update.

  Over time, Buddy continued to heal. With bandages wrapped around his head, Buddy was unable to see, but vets were relieved to discover that the burns had not damaged his eyelids. “He continues to move forward daily,” the Humane Society wrote on Facebook. 

“During his bandage change today, he showed remarkable improvement in the appearance of his face. While Buddy continues to heal, he is learning some basic commands.”

After a few months of progress, Buddy had undergone skin grafts that made him require fewer bandages, allowing him to slowly return to his old self. 

“Now that his ears are loose from the bandages, he is much happier and more playful. I am sure he is feeling so much joy as he slowly gets his life back to normal,” Tunica Humane Society reported last summer.

  And Buddy hit a major milestone last August after vets finally removed the bandages from his face, allowing him to see for the first time in months. 

“His eyes were actually open and he was very aware,” the Humane Society wrote. “In answer to your thousands and thousands of prayers, YES, Buddy can still see.”

Finally being able to see was a huge step towards returning to normalcy for this poor pup, and his carers say that his personality has begun to shine again. 

“Buddy’s whole personality has changed since seeing the light of day,” Sandy Williams, director of the Tunica Humane Society, told WREG.

And recently, one year after Buddy was horribly burned, the Humane Society announced another inspiring update: Buddy is now “fully healed.” 

Buddy has been living in a foster home with Dr. Swanson, and the vet confirmed that Buddy is living his best life.

 

“His face is now completely healed,” the Tunica Humane Society wrote. “He no longer has to wear an e-collar and he is loving that! His days are now spent like any normal dog. Playing fetch, taking long walks, being spoiled for the awesome dog he is!” 

“Buddy’s miraculous recovery from his near fatal injuries is truly a Miracle and all of his caregivers have much to be proud of.”

Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, who treated Buddy, also marked the occasion with a reunion with their patient and celebrated Buddy’s recovery. 

“Many surgeries, hugs from everyone in the hospital, and games of fetch later, he’s thriving in his foster home!” the college wrote in a Facebook post, sharing a photo of all the vet staff with the happy and healed Buddy.

  It’s horrific to think about what Buddy went through, but we’re so glad to see how far he’s come over the past year.

It was a no-brainer: Sebahat knew she couldn’t just leave the pups. At the same time, she also knew the improbability of saving all the homeless pups right off the bat. So instead of panicking, Sebahat set out her priorities. 

She would start by going to the areas where the abandoned pups were barely surviving. She started the journey by waking up at the break of dawn every morning. She would then gather blankets, water, and food, and start the trek into the mountains to search for new pups. 

Of course, the pups loved to see their savior – and not just because she brought them food and water, or tried to build them better shelter. The pups knew that Sebahat truly cared for them, and they loved her for the companionship she offered. And after being cruelly abandoned by previous “owners”, it was only right that the pups finally had happiness in the form of a loving human. 

The journey didn’t end there. To this day, Sebahat visits 5 areas on a daily basis to give abandoned pups everything she has (and more). Despite her actions to help the homeless pups, Sebahat still didn’t like leaving them out in the open with no protection. 

Fortunately, this sparked an idea that would begin a slow (but necessary) change. With the help of a few volunteers, Sebahat started building sheds to give the pups some shelter. Source
Sebahat and the pups are forces to be reckoned with though. The cruel actions of others have only made them more determined to beat the odds. 

“I’m just doing what we should all be doing,” Sebahat said. “And I’ll never give up.”

In the successful animation movie the parrots fought for their survival as Blu flies all the way from America to Brazil to find Jewel, the last female of its species. 

The two fall in love and they have a baby in the happy ending story. Unfortunately in real life Spix’s Macaw parrots did not make it. While many of bird extinctions occurred on solitary islands, the most recent ones were in South America, the study reveals. 

That shows the dramatic impact of deforestation in those areas. According to the Red List of Endangered Species, about 187 bird species have disappeared worldwide since 1500. The causes of this rapid decline include the introduction of invasive species, hunting and deforestation, as reported by the organization in Cambridge, UK. 

Nowadays, the huge urban areas expansion and global warming put an extremely pressure on wildlife with many animals forced to adapt or to extinct. As about the blue parrots who have bright blue plumage are officially extinct in the wild. 

However, some exemplars are living in captivity.

That was the story for one dog, who became trapped in a dam after being abandoned by his owners, until firefighters came to the rescue — and thankfully this dog now has a new family. 

According to 5 News Online, the white dog was in the Lake Wister Dam in LeFlore County, standing on a concrete flat but surrounded by rushing water and in danger of being swept up by the current.

  Madison Renee and her family were among the onlookers who arrived on the scene, worried about the dog but unable to get down to help her. 

“When we got there, there seemed to be no way to get down to her,” Madison told 5 News. “We all stood around and watched her try to adjust in the current hoping she wouldn’t be swept under.” 

They also realized the poor dog was likely thrown over intentionally, as it was the only way the dog could’ve gotten into that spot. 

But thankfully, help was soon on the way. Members of the Wister Fire Department volunteered to make a rescue. After requesting the dam be temporarily shut off, they arrived by boat and were able to reach the dog with a rope.

  Volunteer firefighter Aaron Capell says the dog was “scared” and “skittish” when they arrived, but soon warmed up to them: “I talked to her and eventually, she let me pet her,” he told 5 News. 

After the life-saving rescue, the dog, now named Grace, was taken to the Poteau Valley Humane Society.

  Thankfully, the dog’s story soon found a happy ending. James and Paula Watson, from Charleston, Arkansas, saw the story on TV and immediately “fell in love” with Grace, according to an update from 5 News. 

It turns out one of the couple’s rescue dogs had died just three weeks earlier, and seeing the abandoned dog on TV, they knew it was meant to be and they could give Grace a good home. 

After visiting Grace at Poteau Valley Humane Society, they knew their love was for real and adopted her for good.

 

“There’s nothing like being hugged by a big dog,” Paula told 5 News. “If you’ve ever been hugged by a big dog, then you’ll know what I mean.” 

“There’s a look that you get when that’s the right dog. And she has that look.”

  So it happens that each now during a shot flowing through a window like a face, the moving scene appears which makes you silent and invite you to reflect some moments about the value of truth what exactly. On Instagram posted the image of a homeless man who holds a dog on his arm, a scene that contains the equivalent of the sadness of misery, but also the tenderness of compassion and therefore light hope. 

As often happens, everyone tends to ensure what they need, touch as in the Rorschach stain test, and tasks out what they truly convey inside. Among the possibility of reading, someone cannot help but think that, even though it is a representation of poverty and what it means to measure on the road, this photo conveys an important message. 

That person and his puppy rest calmly among all, giving one affection and luxury. Foreigners are not alone, but can trust the unconditional love of a loyal friend, guardian soul without wings but with four paws.

It’s also left many people separated from their beloved pets, whether they’re split at the border or lost amidst the chaos of war. 

Thankfully, there are also people who are working hard to reunite people with their pets. Recently, one cat made it back to his family after being transported from Ukraine to the United States. Larysa Frisby, from Ukraine, was in Arkansas when the invasion began in February, and thus avoided having to flee the conflict. However, her cat Persik was still in Odesa, and she was unsure how to get him to safety. 

“With the outbreak of hostilities on February 24 in Ukraine, it was hard to believe how this could happen,” Larysa told 5 News Online. “My plans collapsed with the advent of the war to return home to Ukraine and visit my relatives and take the cat with me.” 

But soon Humane Society International, which has been helping refugees with pets at the Polish border find safety, heard her story and stepped in to help. 

Larysa’s cousin was able to transport Persik from Odesa to Warsaw, Poland. And from there, Kelly Donithan, director of animal disaster response for the Humane Society, was able to fly with the cat from Poland to the US. “This single story of one cat, Persik, is emblematic of Humane Society International has seen through the chaos and trauma of this war: strangers and communities coming together to help one another however they can, including beloved animals,” Kelly said. 

“Larysa nearly lost hope of ever seeing Persik, but someone always jumped in to assist and bring this cat out of the war and ultimately to his mom. I am grateful that I was able to help finally get him home.” After arriving in the United States, Persik’s long journey was finally over as he reunited with his loving owner, far from the war in Ukraine. “By the grace of God, the cat is in my home with love and care,” Larysa told 5 News. 

“I want to express special gratitude to the people who took part in saving my cat from the war in Ukraine, to everyone who provided help and care in Warsaw for several weeks.” “While incredibly special, this is not a unique story. We are seeing compassion every day across Ukraine, Europe and around the world,” Kelly said.

MASH runs a program that allows inmates at a prison to care for dogs rescued from abuse, providing them with the comfort they need to learn to trust people again. It’s a great program for the dogs, obviously, who’ve been moved from awful conditions to the shelter, but for the inmates, too, who get the joy of time spent with a bunch of pups. Six days a week women at the prison are moved to the shelter as part of the 30 day program. 

Since 2000, the shelter’s provided a place where dogs, cats, and horses can be cared for until they’re ready to move to a permanent home, and where inmates can get some much needed interaction with animals. 

Volunteers investigate complaints of animal cruelty, go in and rescue the animals, and then bring them back to the shelter where they can recover. 

The cells have been converted into mini rooms for the dogs, and have been renamed Bow Wow Way, Purr Lane, 2nd Chance, and Ruff Road. Lovely. ‘I get so much out of it, probably more than the dogs do,’ Kristina Hazelett, one of the women in the program, told REUTERS. ‘It’s very therapeutic for me as well, not just them, which was an unexpected, pleasant surprise.’ Kristina, along with the other women in the program, had to go through rigorous interviews and screenings before they were allowed to start looking after the dogs.

  These wonderful creatures are kept in the Chengdu Research Base in China with special breeding program and care. This remarkable animals are unique both for being so cute and for breeding rarely. The female pandas have only 2-3 days during the year to breed. Besides, they can birth only one cub. This research center is the place where these adorable creatures are well cared and safe from extinction. They are one of the endangered animals. And thanks to such centers their number gradually grows. So it is truly wonderful to have these places where the magnificent animals are safe and protected.

Like one sweet rescue dog, who recently turned 23 — an incredible age in dog years — and got a very special birthday party to celebrate. 

Bully, a Chihuahua, has had a good long life, but when he was 21, he had a major life change: his elderly owner could no longer care for him, and he was taken in by the senior dog rescue The Mr. Mo Project, according to The Dodo.

  It can be difficult for a dog to find himself in new surroundings at such an old age. Bully — also known as Bobo — is a “super senior” in dog years: he’s now well past the life expectancy of Chihuahuas. 

But after two years in the rescue, Bully has adjusted to his new home and has continued to thrive. “Bully is feisty, naughty, sweet, independent, gentle, calm and he has an old man bark,” Chris Hughes, who runs the rescue, told The Dodo.

Bully is now the rescue’s oldest resident — so when recently celebrated his incredible 23rd birthday, they made sure to celebrate in style. 

According to a Facebook post, Bully was born on April 5, 1999. He is one of the few dogs still alive who has lived through two millenniums. He’s reached an age few dogs could dream of.

  While it’s an occasion worthy of a big splash, this old dog preferred a more low-key celebration. “He doesn’t have too many teeth, so we got a soft biscuit and crumbled it up for him to enjoy,” Hughes said.

Chris Hughes started the Mr. Mo Project with his wife Mariesa, and senior dogs have a very special place in their hearts. 

They were inspired to start the rescue after caring for a 12-year-old dog named Moses who had been surrendered for “being too old.” The couple has reportedly spent over $55,000 turning their home into a sanctuary for senior dogs, all to ensure these often-overlooked senior pets have a safe, loving place to spent their twilight years. 

“We both work full-time jobs outside of The Mr. Mo Project,” Chris told Insider. “This is not a job, this is a labor of love. It’s where all our money goes toward.”

“A lot of these dogs that come to us are probably overlooked because of the way they look. They’ve got bad legs, bad teeth, crusted eyes, they’re matted. But they have so much life to live.” 

They’ve seen many senior dogs come and go over the years, and are always sure to celebrate their dogs’ big life milestones. “We try to celebrate all the great things that happen in our home because so often there are not-so-great things that happen,” Chris told The Dodo. 

“We celebrate when dogs finish chemo treatments, birthdays, adoptions and have been known to have Christmas in July if we think someone won’t make it until Christmas.” 

And Bully’s big 23rd birthday was certainly one of the most special occasions — not just because of his remarkably advanced age, but because of how much he has meant to them over the past two years.

“When he came to us I honestly didn’t want to add another dog to our pack, especially a 21 year old,” the owners wrote on Instagram. “But you know what? The universe must have known we needed Bully because this dog brings us so much joy I can’t even imagine my life without him now.”

  He noticed that his dog stopped eating and started having bloody diarrhea, so he stepped up and went out to find help. He walked 2 miles into town to an animal rescue that helps care for local dogs and cats. 

A worker from the rescue organization called Stöckigt said: “She was very thin and the boy told us he didn’t have enough money for food for her. We told him we would do our best to save her life, and find her a new loving home that can take care of her. 

We thanked him for bringing her to us for help.” It turned out that the pup, called Nanuk, was suffering from a lethal illness called parvovirus, and she wouldn’t have survived without treatment. To cheer Nanuk up, she got regular visits from other foster kittens in the shelter. “I think it is a combination of the kittens, having one of us by her side the whole time giving her love and encouragement…” Stöckigt said. 

The rescuers are on the look for a loving forever home for Nanuk. If she wasn’t going to eat, Nanuk was going to die. Thank god for the good heart of this young boy who saved her life! Now Nanuk is looking for a forever home!
