When Dutch bike company Vanmoof started shipping orders, they soon found upwards of 25% of their products were being damaged during delivery.

For a startup company selling a $3,000 electrified bike, the unexpected costs were threatening to cripple the young upstart.

That’s when the company’s founders came up with an ingenious solution: put a photo of a TV on the packaging and hope the couriers would treat the packages more delicately.

According to the company, it worked! And damages due to shipping have plummeted 80% ever since (even after being outed on social media, damage has remained low). For more info on the actual bikes, check out their official site.

Imagine how terrifying it would be to get completely buried in snow, alone with nobody around to help. One poor creature recently found itself in just such a set of frightening circumstances.

In early January, employees of the Austrian Federal Railways were busy clearing train tracks in Gesaeuse national park in central Austria. There, they noticed an animal standing to the side… where it quickly disappeared underneath a deluge of snow.

According to Austrian Railway OEBB, the goat had refused to move away from the side of the tracks as the train approached, even ignoring its loud honking. They weren’t able to stop in time to avoid covering the animal in snow. They’re just glad they saw it at all.

But thanks to the men’s persistent and careful efforts, the chamois began emerging from the snowdrift bit by bit. Finally, in what must have been a huge relief, the exhausted goat pulled itself up and ran away into a nearby forest.

Austrian Railway OEBB uploaded the footage of the rescue to Twitter, where it got thousands of views. Many praised the workers for doing everything they could to save a life.

“A heroic act!” One commenter wrote in German. “Normally, little to no thought is given to how difficult animals are at snow depths. Not every animal will probably be gifted with so much luck.”

“Great commitment and such a happy ending,” another said. “Thank you to the rescuers.”

Prince was reunited with his owner last week after reportedly surviving on his own for 96 days.

Kari Yarbrough was heading back home to Colorado Springs on Oct. 22 when she was involved in a car crash outside Buena Vista. Yarbrough says she had an open warrant for failing to appear in court and was taken to a Chaffee County jail. When she was released, she says she found out her dogs had been placed by authorities in a nearby yard, from which Prince had escaped.


"I was devastated. I was lost," Yarbrough says. "I had to find him, so I dedicated everything to it."

Yarbrough put out a desperate plea on Facebook, which Buena Vista animal advocate Monika Courtney saw.

"She was so devoted," says Courtney. "That woman is so strong. She was going to find that dog and I felt so inspired with this devotion and perseverance that I assisted the search with the logistics."

Courtney gave Yarbrough a tent and camping supplies, and the two set out in search of Prince. For the entire winter, the two followed sightings throughout the area. At one point, a postal worker saw him, but Yarbrough says Prince quickly became afraid of humans.

"It was so emotional. Every time we didn't get him, I thought it was my last time seeing him," she says.

Courtney helped set traps while tracking paw prints and contacting property owners to get permission to search there.

Courtney has been through this before. She helped in the highly publicized search for Bentley, a dog that was found alive after being thrown from a vehicle last year.

"The most crucial time in any search, is you have to get on it right away," Courtney says. "They can turn into feral dogs in weeks. It's like a switch goes off in their head."

Finally, after months of searching, they cornered Prince on Jan. 26 behind a church.

"As soon as I put my hand under his nose, he knew it was me, and he could breathe, and he was OK," says Yarbrough.

Seven-year-old Prince lost about 25 pounds, according to Yarbrough. She said he was covered in ticks.

"I would give anything to be able to hear his story," Yarbrough says.

"It's hard to comprehend how he survived," says Courtney.

There were plenty of happy tears shed when a stolen Husky reunited with his family two years after he went missing. Semper the Siberian Husky was reunited with his mom, Kameroun Mares, but his return home was a long and arduous journey.

Kameroun Mares was getting chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia back in 2013 when she got Semper as a puppy. She named him Semper Fidelis — “Always faithful” in Latin, but a few years into her treatment, the unthinkable happened.

In 2016, Kameroun traveled to California from Florida, leaving Semper in the care of her then roommate. But while out west she received word that Semper had gone missing.


She searched everywhere, but he had vanished. She continued to search even as she lived in California, posting to the internet and continually calling rescues and shelters throughout Florida. She was hoping someone would find Semper and have him scanned as he had a microchip.

She reached out to Ana Campos, a private investigator for more help. That’s when Campos learned something strange. Kameroun had registered Semper with AKC Reunite – a service connected to his microchip.



“A year into this someone suggested she [Kameroun] check her AKC Reunite chip again. So she went to the humane society in May 2017 and they checked online … That is when she discovered that a year earlier, on April 11, 2016, a woman added her name to Semper’s chip,” Campos told The Dodo.

The other microchip company didn’t bother to check to see whether Semper’s chip had an owner already registered on it. Campos dug further and found that someone had listed Semper on Craigslist for $200. That’s why Kameroun had never found him – he had been “flipped”.

According to Campos, it was Kameroun’s roommate who sold Semper. “He was stolen and sold by her roommate 2 1/2 years ago,” Campos wrote on Facebook. “She was told he was lost on April 30, 2016. But on April 11, 2016 the buyer added their name to his AKC Reunite ‘registered chip’. They registered this registered chip on Petkey pets instead. Petkey pets did not bother to see if he was chipped already.”

After a lawyer was retained, a judge ruled in Kameroun’s favor and Semper was retrieved from the person who bought him, and returned to Kameroun.




Finally after 2.5 years of searching and hoping to find him, Kameroun was about to be reunited with Semper. Here is a video of that emotional moment.

Kameroun says that Semper still remembers the commands she taught him and is settling in nicely to his new home in California. “I see him as extension of myself and my heart,” Kameroun said. “I am glad I have him back in my arms.”
