At least 88 people have died due to the destruction, making it the deadliest December tornado storm on record in the US, and countless others have suffered from property damage. 

 But in the wake of this tragic disaster, survivors are now picking up the pieces and looking for signs of hope. For one Kentucky woman who narrowly escaped death, that sign is her dog.  Mayfield, Kentucky was one of the worst-hit cities during the tornado outbreak, and resident Deanna Badillo just barely escaped from her home in time, along with her friend. 

  “My friend and I both said we’ve cheated death,” Deanna told WHAS11. 

“I think it’s because of God’s grace and I’m not done on this planet.” She says they were able to escape by crawling out of a hole, but the experience was too sudden and surreal to fully recall. 

  “I didn’t see anything… but what I felt I can’t explain that to you. I can’t explain what it feels like to stand here and tell you what I went through.” While Deanna and her friend miraculously, just barely escaped in time, others were not so lucky. 

Her neighborhood experienced great loss and destruction: according to WHAS, a four-year-old boy died just two blocks away after being trapped under rubble. 

 But in the aftermath, all the survivors are looking to regroup and see signs of hope — and Deanna got one in the form of her own pet dog. After the tornado hit, Deanna assumed that her dog didn’t make it out alive. But two days later, a neighbor found it, and the pet returned home. 

 In the wake of natural disasters like this, the unexpected survival of pets can provide an unexpected sliver of hope. And for Deanna, it meant the world. 

It’s the little things that matter–that little dog every bit of her matters,” she told WHAS11.

Homeless People Paid Real Money

Since March 2020, the coronavirus has crippled businesses of all sizes and left millions of Americans out of work. According to a recent analysis conducted by Columbia University economics professor Dr. Brendan O’Flaherty, homelessness in the United States could grow as much as 45% by the end of the year. That would mean an additional 250,000 people could be without shelter. The U.S. unemployment rate has reached 14.7%, a level unseen since the depths of the Great Depression in 1933. Several respected models predict unemployment has not yet reached its peak. “This is unprecedented,” Dr. O’Flaherty said. “No one living has seen an increase of 10% of unemployment in a month.” In addition to the federal government’s economic relief program, states and local governments have been working hard to create jobs for the homeless. The state of Arkansas is no exception. The number of homeless reported in 2018 was approximately 2280 including 240 unaccompanied youth. That number has surely jumped in the last year mainly due to the loss of jobs from the coronavirus. 

The town of Little Rock Arkansas has set a commendable example for community solutions to the homeless problem. In April, the Bridge to Work program began paying homeless people $9.25 per hour to pick up trash. Canvas Community Church in Little Rock has been in charge of the program since its inception. The homeless participants have found more than just a sense of community. The program has given them a paycheck as well as mental and physical health services, job interviews and, in some cases, temporary housing. 

 Associate Pastor Paul Atkins said 380 people have joined the work crews, some more than once. The teams work in groups of eight. Most sign up through the church, but each team leaves a space open in case a panhandler it encounters on its route wants to join. After a total of 130 sites cleaned, 1,821 hours worked, and 2,056 bags of trash collected, hearts and minds have been changed. Felecia Cooks, a team leader in the program, was not convinced it would be as successful as it has been. “This is just a dream come true for the entire community,” she said. City Council members Capi Peck, Lance Hines, and Kathy Webb all spoke highly of the results from Bridge to Work’s first five months, with Peck calling the program a “win-win.” The City of Little Rock spent $80,000 for the pilot’s first six months, and the board will have to approve a resolution to extend the funding. There is great hope among all that the program will continue for another year. 

Luckily, unlike plastic, glass is a natural material made out of sand, that eventually turns back into sand once it has eroded into tiny enough pieces.

  Before it breaks all the way back down into sand, it is tumbled by the ocean into these dazzling little stones called “sea glass.”

 
Today, entire beaches of sea glass can be found in the northeastern United States, Bermuda, Scotland, the Isle of Man, northern England, Mexico, Hawaii, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Nova Scotia, Australia, Italy and southern Spain.


Naturally produced or “genuine sea glass” originates from broken bottles, broken tableware, or even shipwrecks. 

The glass shards are rolled and tumbled by the ocean’s tides for decades until all the sharp edges are smoothed and rounded.

The glass loses its slick surface and gains a frosted appearance.

The process takes between 30 and 100 years.

Sea glass collectors can often tell where and when the glass originated by its color.

The most common colors of sea glass – kelly green, brown, white, and clear – come from modern beer, juice and soft drink bottles, as well as plates, drinking glasses, windshields and windows.

Less common colors include jade, amber, forest green and ice blue, which came from whiskey bottles, medicine bottles and ink bottles from the late 19th and and early 20th centuries, and lime green, which comes from soda bottles in the 1960s. These colors account for about one in every 25 to 100 pieces of sea glass found.


Even less common colors include purple and cobalt blue (from early Milk of Magnesia bottles, poison bottles and Vicks VapoRub containers) and aqua (from Ball Mason jars). 

These colors account one in every 200 to 1,000 pieces found.


Extremely rare colors include gray, pink (often from Great Depression-era plates), teal (Mateus wine bottles), yellow (1930s Vaseline containers), turquoise (from tableware and art glass), red (car tail lights and nautical lights) and orange. These colors account for every 1,000 to 10,000 pieces collected.


Even harder to find is antique black glass that dates over 500 years old, thought to originate from pirates liquor bottles in the Caribbean!
