Geologists in Saudi Arabia recently unearthed the remains possibly the last animal one would expect to find in the Kingdom’s vast desert: a whale. Yes, the remains of a 37 million-year-old extinct whale have been found in a Saudi Arabian desert. Experts have found it extremely difficult for whales to survive in the desert, which probably explains the extinction. 

But seriously—the amazing discovery is a key to Saudi Arabia’s ancient history, when the sea expanded far within the borders of the present day Peninsula. The Saudi Geological Survey announced that the whale was from the Upper Eocene era, in the Al-Jawf region, northwest of the Kingdom. 

CEO of the Saudi Geological Commission Abdullah Al-Shamrani said that a survey was conducted on the calcareous cliffs, which contain limestone and other chalky substances, near the governorates of Qurayyat and Haditha. 

The survey aimed to gather and identify the types of marine fossils and their deposition on environments in northern Saudi Arabia 37 million years ago. This is not the first archaeological source that Saudi Arabia has discovered. 

Earlier this year, archaeologists in northwest Saudi Arabia uncovered the earliest evidence of dog domestication by the region’s ancient inhabitants. The dog’s bones showed signs of arthritis, which suggests the animal lived with the humans into its middle or old age. 

Rock art found in the region indicates that the Neolithic inhabitants used dogs when hunting ibex, wild asses, and other animals, maybe whales. 

“What we are finding will revolutionize how we view periods like the Neolithic in the Middle East. To have that kind of memory—that people may have known for hundreds of years where their kin were buried – that’s unheard of in this period in this region,” said Melissa Kennedy, assistant director of the Aerial Archaeology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (AAKSAU) – AlUla project.

The discovery came from one of the many projects happening in the many archaeological surveys and excavations happening in AlUla, the ancient and unexplored city sitting in the Northwest desert of the country. 

AlUla is a largely unknown oasis valley in the vast desert of the Northwest Arabian Peninsula, once a prosperous and important crossroad on the incense route and home to 3,000 years of powerful successive civilizations.

  Recently, a family was on vacation when they were joined by a wild bear. They were at a remote woodland area in Maryland when they were met by a friendly black bear who decided to join them in their picnic. 

He came and sat on the edge of the picnic table. A TikTok video posted by Kaitlyn Nesbit shows a black bear enjoying the picnic with the family. Very patiently, the bear waited for a peanut butter sandwich which was fed to the bear by one of the men. Nesbit was just the onlooker who was watching everything in disbelief. 

The group continued to make the sandwiches for the bear who was sitting with them as one of the gang. The bear was always around and it never bothered anyone. Nesbit said that they were told not to make sudden movements and stay where they had been. 

According to him, most of them were very much scared and filmed the incident from the deck. The bear just emerged from the trees looking for food and then he joined the group of four men and a woman having a picnic. 

The group was very nervous as they were having their drinks as they looked at the hungry bear who was waiting to be served. Then one man decided to bring a loaf of bread for the bear pointing to the bear to wait as the sandwich is being made as we are instructing a dog. 

When the sandwich was ready, the man held it for the bear who took it slowly from his hand. The group even hid the snack of beers from the bear. At last, the bear walked back into the woods unharmed.

Apparently, Ian had been bird-watching on the RSPB Reserve at Frampton Marshes, when he witnessed something unusual through his telescope. Ian had discovered a massive herd of over 30 cows surrounding a stranded, unconscious pup. The poor creature was lying buried in the marshy soil, while the cows looked on anxiously as they wondered how to help the distressed baby. 

Considering the lack of time and the uncertainty of the situation, the sanctuary workers provided Ian with crucial instructions on how to navigate around the herd and retrieve the baby. 

When he got a better look, he was shocked to realize that the creature was not a pup, but rather a baby seal! 

 

The next hour was tense, but the 67-year-old animal lover meticulously followed the workers’ advice and successfully hauled the traumatized pup to safety!

The baby seal, later on named Event, was rushed to the sanctuary’s hospital in a dehydrated and lethargic state. She was simply 5 days old and most likely was orphaned. 

The veterinarian speculated that Celebration wound up in the marshland after being swept away in a high tide. 

For the next couple of days, the baby seal got on hydrating fluids until her health eventually stabilized. Party is also young to feed on her own in water, so she can not be released right into her habitat yet. 

One more pressing issue is her respiration trouble, for which she is undergoing an antibiotic-based treatment. 

Celebration is currently mingling well with the various other puppies in the sanctuary, and it’s just an issue of time that she makes a full recovery!

The Gaboon Viper, also called the Gaboon adder, ranks as one of the largest and deadliest vipers on the African continent. Hailing from the lush rainforests and dry savannas of Central and West Africa, this elusive serpent is renowned for its vibrant and intricate camouflage, making it a true master of disguise. 

The snakes are only outweighed by exceptionally large King Cobras, they exceed 6 feet in length and weigh more than 20 pounds. What’s even more spine-chilling is that this snake possesses fangs that hold the record for being the longest among all venomous serpents, measuring up to a staggering 2 inches in length. 

The Gaboon Viper also possesses one of the most potent venom deliveries in the snake world. Its venom, a potent cocktail of enzymes and toxins, is capable of causing severe tissue damage, leading to excruciating pain, and if left untreated, can be potentially fatal in consequence. The head is large and triangular but it’s the serpent’s intricate skin patterns that truly captivates the imagination. The excellent camouflage makes the snake blend perfectly into the leaf litter on the forest floor – it’s almost impossible to discover it before it strikes. 

The Gaboon Viper employs a patient and strategic approach to ambush its prey – it’s a very patient creature who spends long periods motionless before the attack. Feasting on fully grown rabbits, monkeys, and occasionally even the small royal antelope. This voracious predator showcases its incredible appetite and also its ability to consume sizable prey. 

Fortunately, human encounters and snakebites involving this species are rare. Due to its preference for remote habitats and generally non-aggressive behavior, reported cases of attacks on humans remain scarce. 

However, when such incidents occur, they are often a result of unintentional encounters where individuals inadvertently step on the snake. In these unfortunate situations, the consequences can fatal if anti-venom is not obtained. Notably, this viper possesses the unique ability to hold onto its prey after biting, allowing for the injection of larger quantities of venom into the bloodstream. As mentioned, the Gaboon viper is naturally found only in Africa. 

However, that hasn’t stopped some Americans from keeping them as pets in their homes. Due to its status as the largest viper in the world and its striking appearance, the Gaboon viper attracts snake enthusiasts who are eager to have one as a pet. However, sometimes this choice can have disastrous consequences – and that’s precisely what happened in Virginia in 2022. 

According to reports, a man that was keeping the deadly snake as a pet got bitten. Police were called to the scene, and the man was swiftly transported to Richmond Hospital and admitted to the emergency room in a race against time to save his life.

The situation was complicated by the fact that the VCU Medical Center had exhausted its supply of anti-venom, which had been provided by the Smithsonian National Zoo. 

However, in a commendable effort, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach contributed an additional 35 bottles of anti-venom to assist in the treatment. 

It appears that 2022 was an unfortunate year for Gaboon owners – because just a few months prior to the Virginia incident, there were reports of a Gaboon Viper biting a man in North Carolina. The man required 44 vials of anti-venom and tragically lost several fingers in the process. Fortunately, the likelihood of encountering this venomous snake in the United States is extremely low, although there have been reports of Gaboon Vipers escaping into the wild. 

In 2015, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reported a possible sighting of the deadly snake in Milledgeville, Georgia. In 2021, a video shared by The Reptile Report went viral on social media. It featured a Gaboon Viper spotted on the street, and people were captivated by its remarkable camouflage against the surroundings. 

And when it moved, it almost looked like a caterpillar! The video garnered significant attention, and it’s easy to see why – what an incredible creature this is:

A group of wild elephants demolished a banana plantation in Tamil Nadu, India leaving only a tree with a bird’s nest and hatchlings inside. 

The elephants’ gesture is already winning hearts online after the video went viral. According to Thanthi TV, the event occurred at Sathyamangala, a town in Erode district, when five wild elephants approached the town after leaving the Vilamundi Forest. 

According to accounts, the elephants entered the yard of a guy named Krishnasamy and destroyed over 300 banana plants. When the guy and other villagers went to inspect the ᴅᴀᴍᴀɢᴇd plot, they discovered something unique and beautiful: a tree with a few hatchlings in the sparrow’s nest that was still standing strong. 

Many viewers were stunned, with many noting how the elephants, despite their anger, emanate tenderness. They were also known as gentle giants by many people.

They are among the largest bats, with a wingspan of 1.5–1.7 m (4 ft 10 in–5 ft 7 in) and weighing 0.7–1.2 kg (1.5–2.6 lb). The only other bats with comparable measurements are a few species of Pteropus. No, these photos are not photoshopped. I can still tell you someone in the comments is going to be like, “NO WAY THAT’S REAL, BRO!” But those are my favorite types of animals to share with you all; ones that cannot possibly exist on Earth but do! The Giant Golden-crowned Flying Fox (Acerodon jubatus) is a prime example of one of those such animals. 

These massive and rare bats are named after the golden fur that lays atop their head which sharply contrasts against its large, dark body. Giant Golden-crowed Flying Foxes have an astonishing wingspan between 4’10″ to 5’7″. They weigh from 1.5–2.6 lb. 

With such long wings, they have to wrap them around their entire body while sleeping making it look like their draped in a long black cape. Now that my friends, is how you know you have a big bat. Little is known about the behavior of these impressive bats because the area they inhabit is so remote. They have been recorded at elevations from sea level to 1,100 m (3,600 ft). 

They make crazy journeys to find food (their favorite being figs) and will fly 25 miles or more in ONE NIGHT to fill their bellies. Another hard reason to find these guys is that they don’t put up with any humans (could you blame them?) and in a study conducted in 2005 NO bats were found living in inhabited areas. Another study found them to be forest obligate species, meaning that they stay hidden in the forest a majority of their time. 

Unfortunately, this incredible species is under threat from deforestation as well as hunting. However, there are a couple of agencies working to preserve the future of the weird and wonderful Golden-crowed Flying Fox. The local government of Maitum, Sarangani in the Philippines has organized a campaign to save the species from extinction. The Subic Bay region of the Philippines plays host to a lot of the research on this species. 

Subic Bay is a 14,000-acre (57 km2) protection area that is managed by individuals who want to preserve the species. Bat Conservation International, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the World Wildlife fund, Lubee Foundation are among the other groups helping to save this species. They provide research funding and education worldwide as well as locally. 

Check them out to see how you can help! The megabat, contrary to its name, is not always large: the smallest species is 6 cm (2.4 in) long and thus smaller than some microbats. The largest attain a wingspan of 1.7 m (5.6 ft), weighing in at up to 1.6 kg (3.5 lb). Most fruit bats have large eyes, allowing them to orient themselves visually in twilight and inside caves and forests. 

Their sense of smell is excellent. In contrast to the microbats, the fruit bats do not use echolocation (with one exception, the Egyptian fruit bat Rousettus egyptiacus, which uses high-pitched tongue clicks to navigate in caves). Megabats make up the only family (Pteropodidae) in order Chiroptera that is not capable of laryngeal echolocation. Echolocation and flight evolved early in the lineage of Chiropterans and echolocation was later lost in family Pteropodidae. 

Both echolocation and flight are energetically expensive processes for bats. The nature of the flight and echolocation mechanism of bats allows for creation of echolocation pulses with minimal energy use. Energetic coupling of these two processes is thought to have allowed for both energetically expensive processes to evolve in bats. 

It is hypothesized that the loss of echolocation is due to the uncoupling of flight and echolocation in megabats. 

The larger average body size of megabats compared to echolocating bats suggests that a larger body size disrupts the flight-echolocation coupling and made echolocation too energetically expensive to be conserved in megabats.

Fighting for animals rights is his first priority. A truly conservationist, Dolph is constantly raising awareness for endangered species. He spends his savings and his holidays working as a volunteer at the Cheetah Experience in South Africa. 

Over the years, the bighearted man made some great efforts to protect and conserve this species. By the time, these huge wild cats learned to love and respect Dolph. During one his trips, he was tired after a long day in the sun, so he decided to take a nap under a tree. 

That’s when a cheetah named Eden spotted Dolph. She walked up to him, sniffed him, and decided to cuddle with the harmless human. To say Dolph was surprised to find Eden when he woke up would be an understatement. And that was the beginning of their friendship. 

A beautiful, amazing, fascinating friendship. Eden looks at Dolph as if he belongs to the same species as her. She cuddles him, nibbles him, purrs and snuggles with him. The bond could not had been more adorable. In fact, Dolph is now being called “The Cheetah Whisperer” since he spends most of his time in cheetah’s company. This is the sweetest thing we’ve seen in a while.

In Zambia, where mushroom-gathering is an important part of life, the Termitomyces titanicus is especially held in high regard. 

While the largest fungus (and organism) in the world is of the genus Armillaria and is currently consuming Oregon on 1,000 hectares, Termitomyces titanicus is the world’s largest edible mushroom, with a cap that can measure a little more than three feet (one meter) across.

The name Termitomyces refers to how the mushroom grows inside a termite hill. The mushrooms in this genus have a symbiotic relationship with termites and grow on their fecal matter, breaking down plant material as food for them. 

Decayed mushroom tissue is another food source for the termites. In turn, the fungi associated with termites receive a steady supply of plant material, in a location with fine-tuned temperature and moisture content optimal for growth. But why does the mushroom grow so big? Well for one, it acquires a huge amount of resources from its insect mutualist, as termite colonies can reach densities in the millions, with countless individuals foraging for organic material to feed them. But it’s size is not only due the large amounts of energy it obtains: this horizontally transferred fungus must spread enough spores to be found by suitable termite species. 

In low producing savanna ecosystems, the distribution of termite mound may be quite patchy. So, to ensure that it gets a good chance at finding a suitable substrate, the fungus has evolved one of, if not the, largest mushrooms on the planet. Titanicus grows in the winter during the rains, which is prime mushroom season in its habitat. It has a meaty texture and a savory, smoky taste which is considered to be particularly delicious.

“This blue Lobster was caught off the coast of Portland yesterday and returned to the water to continue to grow. Blue lobsters are one in 2 million,” he wrote. While the shells of lobsters are generally red or brown in color, the crustacean’s blue shell is a result of a genetic mutation. 

It causes the lobster to produce more of a particular protein than other lobsters, lending its shell a rare blue color, reported Toronto Sun. Blue lobsters are extremely rare, but given the number of lobsters being caught for consumption, it's inevitable that a few of them are blue in color. Fishermen also believe it's a sign of good luck to catch a blue lobster, reported BBC. 

The lobsters caught in North Atlantic tend to be greeny-brown and turn pinkish-red on being boiled, which is what most people who consume them see. 

 "The American lobster is usually a sort of greeny-brown, so anything bright blue would look very odd to fishermen there," said Charlie Ellis, a researcher at the U.K.'s National Lobster Hatchery, in Cornwall. "But European lobsters tend to be a duller blue color. 

The real sort of iridescent blue is still rare here, but the difference is that, to a European fisherman, it will seem less completely out of the ordinary than it would seem to a North American."

Yellow, orange and crystal-colored lobsters are considered even rarer than bright blue ones. According to Lobster Institute, yellow lobsters account for about one in 30 million of total stocks, while the chances of catching an albino or "crystal" lobster are believed to be one in 100 million. 

Two fishermen in Dorset caught a crystal lobster in 2011. "Whatever the odds of catching different-colored lobsters, there's no denying that bright blue ones are truly beautiful creatures," said Rob Bayer, executive director of the University of Maine Lobster Institute. 

Some restaurants made the news for getting a blue lobster along with its catch and giving it a new place to live. It's become something of a trend for restaurants to spare blue lobsters. 

Austin Hopley, a chef at "The Hare" in Rochdale, U.K., made news for sparing a bright sapphire-colored lobster. Hopley said he suffered a "crisis of conscience" and decided to spare its life and even named it Larry. Hopley gave the lobster to Sea Life in Manchester, where it continues to live, reported BBC News. 

Hopley said he hadn't seen anything like this before. "I knew the morally right thing to do was to find him a home where everybody could appreciate him," he said. "I found out it was really rare, so I thought 'I can't kill this, I don't want to'. 

He finally got in touch with Merlin Entertainments who own Sea Life and they were really happy to take it. 

"They sent someone out to get him and now he's there for people to enjoy," said Hopley. "I felt like I needed to make sure it happened. I felt responsible. Something so rare didn't warrant a place on the menu," he added. "Every species deserves a fair chance at survival," said Hopley, who has since removed all lobster from his menu.

But for Allison Lamb, a rowdy but adorable set of neighbors is always the first indication. As Lamb told in an interview, they can hear all the frogs starting to croak when spring has come. 

Lamb claims that the frogs that frequent her property and place of business, Snohomish Lavender Farm, are numerous and extraordinarily active.

Lamb frequently discovers a frog or two hopping around her house, but she was astonished to see a frog doing something she had never seen before, as when she went to check on her flower garden one day: he was taking a much-needed nap in one of her dahlias. Lamb said that she was thrilled to see a frog napping in one of her dahlias. She raises around 200 dahlias on her property and was delighted to discover that the blooms serve as a perfectly sized hotel for frogs in addition to serving as a source of pollen for bees. 

As the summer wore on, “I started seeing more and more,” Lamb remarked. Some days she might find over ten different frogs hiding in her flowers. In the spring and summer, Lamb and her kids spend most of their mornings in their flower garden searching for pacific tree frogs. The frogs’ visit provides them with excitement and fun. 

However, the frogs that scuttle inside the dahlias’ tiny petal pockets aren’t only there for amusement. They are essential to maintaining the health and vitality of the flower garden, particularly the dahlias. Lamb said, “The frogs eat the bad bugs for me.“

Of course, the frogs are not the only creatures that live in Lamb’s flower garden. 

According to Lamb, the bees will spend the night in her dahlias, she also discovers small spiders finding refuge, and last year she found little gardener snakes up in her blooms. 

“I also have a praying mantis, many salamanders, and a lot of caterpillars in the late summer.” But nothing compares to the frogs huddling inside Lamb’s flowers, in Lamb’s opinion. She adores seeing them dozing among the petals with their little, green heads protruding, and she always laments their departure at the end of the summer.

Until the first frost, when the blooms die, they remain in the blossoms the entire season, according to Lamb. When it gets too cold, the frogs migrate, but Lamb is confident that they will return in the spring.

  Animal rescuers were called after the terrified dog was found on a West Oahu beach. She was swollen, severely dehydrated, covered in sores and missing most of her fur when she was found, PAWS of Hawaii wrote on its Facebook page. 

“Someone had just buried her and they had a machete, so who knows what was next,” said PAWS of Hawaii, which named the dog Leialoha, the Hawaiian word for “beloved child.” The animal rescue group responded to the call and found Leialoha with fresh knife cuts to her paws. 

“The man who buried her, we were led to believe, had started to cut her,” PAWS executive director Ku’ulei Durand told NAVC. The rescued pup was in terrible condition. “She resisted [human help] the first day,” Durand said. “I went there the second day to bathe her and she just bled from every inch of her body. She is missing most of her fur and was sunburned. But I also believe she was burnt from the heat of the hot sand where she was buried. Her legs were so swollen and her skin felt cooked.” 

A Local Veterinarian Provides Medical Care “We received a phone call from Paws of Hawaii saying they were bringing in a dog that was buried alive in the sand,” Dr. Kelly Dowdall-Garberson told NAVC. 

Dowdall-Garberson is the owner of Aloha Affordable Veterinary Services in Aiea, Hawaii. “Leialoha came in about 1.5 hours later. Upon presentation, she was depressed and severely dehydrated. She was covered in sand. She had severe cellulitis and edema of her limbs and was unable to stand. 

She was severely sunburned with multiple lacerations on her legs. She also had chronic scales and crusts.” Durand told local news outlets that they believe Leialoha’s owner planned to kill her. “He felt he was ending her suffering by trying to end her life, instead of getting her the help she needed,” Durand said. “Her skin, if you were able to smell her, is rancid because she has so many open sores that are infected.” 

“After an initial assessment and exam that showed she was stable, we performed a CBC/Chem, E. canis antibody test, parvo antigen test and heartworm antigen test,” Dowdall-Garberson says. “Her initial treatment included a subcutaneous fluid bolus, Convenia, Cerenia and B vitamins. Dowdall-Garberson’s team also also began gently bathing her to remove as much sand as possible. 

“We applied coconut oil/SSD ointment to her skin,” Dowdall-Garberson told NAVC. After several hours, Leialoha began eating and drinking. Once Leialoha was stabilized, Dowdall-Garberson says she was placed with a foster family, who are caring for her with SSD ointment and probiotics. “Leialoha has returned every 2 days for reassessment and a CBC/Chem,” says Dowdall-Garberson. “Her anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis, neutrophilia, hypoproteinemia, hyperglobulinemia, and hypoglycemia are normalizing. 

She is now receiving daily probiotics, BID application of coconut oil/SSD ointment, twice weekly baths of Malaket shampoo, Metronidazole and Enrofloxacin. She has also been treated with Interceptor Plus and Credelio.” 

Dowdall-Garberson, whose clinic partners with several animal rescue organizations on Oahu to provide low-cost veterinary services to animals in their care, happily reports that “Leialoha makes daily strides at home with her foster family — eating treats, seeking affection, wagging her tail and gaining weight.”

So-called floating islands are found in many parts of the world, including Finland, Turkey, Italy, Serbia, the Danube Delta in Romania and Ukraine, Lake Titicaca on the border between Bolivia and Peru, Lake Loktak in India, and many other places. 

However, this Argentinean island stands out from the rest because of its shape and its continuous rotation. Floating islands are usually based on large roots that have ended up in the water and on which some other aquatic plant starts to grow. 

Plants found along the shoreline of wetlands often spread inwards from the shore, to where their roots no longer reach the deeper parts of the lake or river. 

When this happens, they use the oxygen in their root mass as buoyancy and the surrounding vegetation as support to survive in the water.

However, occasional violent storms can tear away these floating islands of vegetation, which can then be carried back and forth across the lake by the wind. 

Usually, they find calm somewhere again along the shoreline or break up completely due to stronger winds. In some cases, however, the floating islands may persist for longer periods. In the aforementioned Lake Titicaca, for example, a group of 120 islands has been taken by an indigenous tribe, the Uru, but these islands require constant maintenance to survive. 

The unusual piece of land known only as “El Ojo” (Eye Island) was formed by some very special currents that keep the circular island in constant motion. 

As it collides with its surroundings, it repeatedly detaches the muddy bits that might have given it a rest. The island itself was just recently discovered by Argentine filmmaker Sergio Neuspiller, who was looking for a location for one of his films about paranormal phenomena when he came across the island in the delta. 

He didn’t know at the time that the piece of land was spinning around slowly – he only found out when he returned to the site shortly afterwards and was surprised to see that the island had moved elsewhere in the meantime. 

The movement can also be seen in Google satellite images taken at different times. The recordings also prove that the island has been in the Paraná delta for almost 20 years, since 2003. Neuspiller got preoccupied with the question of the rotating island later, around 2016, when he, together with an engineer from New York, started raising funds to find out what’s behind the phenomenon. 

They wanted to collect 50,000 dollars to solve the mystery, but since not even a fifth of the amount came together, their investigation, which would have also covered the supernatural, was not completed. What a shame.
