It seems incredibily painful when we hear about animals being abused or neglected. Organizations and rescues do what they can to help in these situations, but when it comes to the laws they are powerless. Until Michael Cicconetti became judge

The judge from Painesville, Ohio, is an animal lover. He states he is tired of seeing these abusers get little to no punishment for the abuse the inflict on animals. That’s why he’s been giving out creative sentences that fit the crimes. His punishments aren’t cruel and unusual but it doesn’t have to be.

“it doesn’t mean that they can’t deal with a little discomfort and embarrassment.”

One punishment handed out by Judge Cicconetti was when one woman left her dog living in filth. The judge decided it was only fitting that she be forced to spend a day in filth as well:

“I want you to go down to the county dump, to the landfill, and I want them to find the stinkiest, smelliest, God-awful odor place they can find in that dump and I want you to sit there for eight hours tomorrow, to think about what you did to that dog while you smell the odor. If you puke, you puke.”
Another offender received a punishment of spending one night in the woods by herself after she abandoned 35 kittens there.

“How would you like to be dumped off at a metro park late at night, spend the night listening to the coyotes … listening to the raccoons around you in the dark night, and sit out there in the cold not knowing where you’re going to get your next meal, not knowing when you are going to be rescued?”

Judge Cicconetti is hoping by using these creative sentences that the word will spread about animal abuse. And abusers will hear the consequences that come will come.

When we are grieving for a loved one, sometimes it’s a complete stranger who can lift our spirits by extending us friendship when we least expect it. This is exactly what happened recently between a depressed dog and a friendly duck.

Two years ago, a dog named George lost his partner, Blackie. The two dogs had been together for 12 years, explains George’s human Jacquie Litton.

George was devastated and became depressed. “George has been heartbroken and has grieved with anxiety so bad that he has almost died twice,” Jacquie explains on Facebook.


Then a duck appeared out of nowhere and approached George.

“We have no idea where this duck came from but he sure does love George and since the duck has arrived George has not cried one time,” says Jacquie.


“It is strange for a Duck to just appear at our house and be attached to your dog and even more strangely the anniversary week of Blackie’s passing,” she adds.

Since arriving the duck, nicknamed “Donald”, hangs out with George and George likes his new companion. Donald feels comfortable enough with George to rest his bill on the dog.


The two also go on walks together.


Jacquie told WVLT Local 8 that the pair will be walking together with Donald quacking and George looking at him and she says “you wonder if they’re really having a conversation”.

The two love to hang out on the porch together.


George has even given up his bed for Donald. “We decided to put George and his duck in the kennel tonight to keep Donald safe. George gave Donald his bed…”


Says Jacquie, “I must say this Duck has found the Golden Egg because anyone who knows me knows this is one ‘Lucky Duck’. I will take the best of care of him… hoping that he stays around.”

I’m sure George is hoping his newfound friend sticks around too! And from the looks of things, Donald isn’t planning on going anywhere.

I’d like to briefly talk about why we adore seeing puppies raised by cats and vice versa. In the video below you can see a light brown puppy among a litter of kittens being raised by a tabby cat. The puppy was just a couple of days old when his mother was killed by a car. It happened in Detroit.

The puppy’s name is Bobby and he is a Chihuahua. The video explains what happened. Bobby had to be placed with somebody to nurse and raise him and the available mother happened to be a cat named Gwen.

Bobby fitted in very nicely thank you very much. You can see in the photograph below that he is very much at home nuzzling up to his new mother and in the video you can see him messing around with his siblings.


Since the video was created Bobby has grown and his five weeks of age. He has been transferred to the Michigan Humane Society from a rescue group that did not have the resources.



I believe that the reason why we find these videos and photographs so endearing is because they reveal to us something that we crave and which we fail at, namely, getting along with people of other cultures and ideas satisfactorily so that we live harmoniously with them.

In this instance we have two species, dog and cat, getting along extremely well and yet humans, who are one species, too often cannot get along with people of a different culture or religion. It is a human failing born out of blindness, arrogance and self-interest. I think we crave after what we find very hard to achieve which is the acceptance of others and their own personal thoughts and ideas and then to respect the views and opinions of others even if we disagree strongly with them.

P.S. Obviously the acceptance of the behavior of others is something else if the behavior is morally repugnant as measured by world opinion.

The unpleasantness cops deal with is never something they become accustomed to; they’re human. If they didn’t feel something when taking in a horrible scene, there would be something wrong. Though they can’t show their reactions physically, they’re still affected by seeing the lowest and cruelest acts humanity can commit on itself and animals.

The Austin, Texas PD’s Animal cruelty division came across a crate that was left on the shoulder of a busy road. They’d received a call alerting them to the dead dog inside. As upsetting as this case would be, the responding officers still had a job to do.

The scene was at a busy intersection in downtown Austin. The cops knew they had to respond quickly. They didn’t want any innocent bystanders to see the horrific state of the scene. Heck, none of them wanted to approach the metal crate. They had no choice. Not even these seasoned professionals were prepared for what they found.

Inside was a young emaciated female puppy. Around the matted fur of her neck was a rhinestone collar, which told them perhaps she had once been well-loved and cared for. That wasn’t the case now. She lay still atop a bed of feces, urine, and rainwater. It was evident she’d been in this condition for some time. Such a tragic end to what could’ve been a wonderful life.




At first glance, things may appear worse than they truly are. sadly, Officer Eva Wagner was forced to peer down at the poor starved pup. She was a sorry, sad sight with her protruding bones and filthy fur. Then as if she were seeing things, Eva noticed the puppy’s tiny ribcage move up and down.


She was alive, but barely. Sophie, as she was later named, needed help fast! With her life in the balance, the officers rushed her to the Austin center for Emergency for immediate treatment. Veterinary technician, Elizabeth Mancera received the 9-pound baby girl.


“The day she came in was a tough day. She was not moving. She was barely breathing. She couldn’t stand.”

Despite Sophie’s miserable condition, she worked to bring her back from the brink of death. She needed a catheter; a gentle bath rid Sophie of the yuck and waste on her body. For two hours, the frozen gal was then given a hot air bath with a hairdryer. This helped keep her body temperature up. When she arrived at the clinic, her core temperature didn’t register on the thermometer.


Sophie, a 1-year-old boxer melted the vet tech’s heart. All her pain and fear were written in her huge lovely eyes. She was begging to be saved. But she didn’t have to worry anymore. She was already on the road to a better life.

Elizabeth knows the importance of making an animal feel they’re loved. It’s helpful for them to hear a voice offering comfort, assurance, and security.

She spoke to Sophie while she treated her: “She just kept looking at me, and I was just talking to her to let her know that we were here… When I called her Sophie, she looked at me, and that’s when I just knew she was going to be OK.”

Elizabeth was permitted to foster the sick boxer. Sophie needed round-the-clock care. The vet tech was determined to get her healthy again. The pooch required a doggie diaper because she couldn’t stand or walk on her own.

She never left Sophie’s side. In a month, the dog gained a right amount of weight. The lovely gal with the chubby cheeks started walking. And bonus…Elizabeth adopted her.

Sophie now has a doggie BFF; she has an extended human family to play with and receive cuddles. She even has a job as the Austin PD’s animal Cruelty division mascot. She’s a lucky pup who just wants to help the folks who saved her life.




She especially loves it when the bad guys are caught. Not to mention the perks that come with her position. Who wouldn’t love all the pats and cuddles? Oh, and field trips.


Sophie’s living the high-life now surrounded by all the love a gal can handle. Not bad for a dog who was once thought dead.
