The residents of Ordular village in western Turkey's Mudurnu district were saddened Wednesday after witnessing the tragedy of an old man and his beloved cat, who helplessly watched their home burn down. 83-year-old Ali Meşe accidentally started the fire himself, while trying to light his heating stove with gasoline. 

His efforts to light a fire, however, went wrong and led to an explosion in the living room, after which the single-story wooden house burned to the ground. Neighbors who noticed the fire immediately informed the fire brigade, who were able to save the old man, his wife, son and cat just in time. 

 The shocked owner of the house was seen hugging his frightened cat, mourning over the loss of his hens. "13 of the 14 hens in the basement died during the fire," Meşe said. The local authorities reached out to Meşe, his wife and two sons who were left homeless when a fire gutted their house. 

Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalın tweeted that he contacted the governor of Bolu province where Meşe lives and the governorate told him that they would address the "needs of uncle Ali." "Let's keep him and his cat warm," Kalın tweeted. Social media users also organized a campaign to help Meşe. Don't miss the video:

The new baby, J53, is the third calf born to J pod so far this year. Executive Director Michael Harris said in a statement the wide age range of the female orcas giving birth is fascinating. 

"This year we've had the youngest mother on record give birth, a 10-year-old, and three of the oldest," Michael Harris, Executive Director of the Center for Whale Research, told CTV News. 

"Now we've got a grandma having a baby. Forty is definitely the new 30 among the Southerns." The new member joins a pod observed thriving earlier this year, lending new hope that the endangered orca population is beginning to have a resurgence.

Gillian Rogers is the founder of Pet Rescue Squad Inc, and is passionate about helping animals. And last week, she saw something that gave her hope. She was riding the 1 train home when she spotted a man on the other side of the car, with something in his lap. She was amazed to realize it was a tiny kitten, wrapped in a towel. Not only that, but the man was bottle-feeding the cat. 

“You could see the caring,” Gillian told The Dodo. “My heart felt like it was going to explode to see someone with that much caring. He was so in the moment.” “The kitten was looking up at him as he fed her. It was so heartwarming.”

She had to know more. She went up and asked the man about his little cat, and he told her his inspiring story. 

He told Gillian that he had found the cat in the city between two buildings, and decided to take her in, feeding her and keeping her warm. 

“It was so heartwarming,” Gillian said. “I told him, ‘Thank you.'” Gillian posted the photo on Facebook, where it has been shared over 13,000 times and received over a thousand comments. 

She was thrilled that the precious moment meant as much to other people as it did to her. “I had no idea the photo was going to resonate as it has. It makes me happy,” she told The Dodo. “I think we all need something to cheer us up.” 

It definitely cheered us up! We’re glad there are people out there willing to go out of their way to save a kitten and make sure they get all the love they need.

That was the case this week, when three fire departments came together to help an elderly horse get out of the mud. Emily Lesko of Beaver County, Pennsylvania is the owner of a 32-year-old horse named Leggs. Recently, the horse was in distress after falling down outside, and was unable to get back up. 

“I was looking out the window and it looked like he was rolling and the next thing I knew he couldn’t get up,” Emily told KDKA. The horse was stuck helplessly on the ground, in the freezing cold weather. 

She called for help, and soon firefighters from the Darlington Township Volunteer Fire Department as well as three other local departments arrived at the farm to help.

  According to KDKA, the firefighters worked together to comfort the horse and keep him warm while they found a way to get him upright. A vet gave Leggs steroids and the firefighters lifted him up, pulling him by a lead from the front and a lift strap from behind. 

Eventually the horse made it back onto his legs, and he was able to walk himself to the barn, much to the relief of the horse’s owner. 

“If they wouldn’t have come, we would have lost him because he wouldn’t have made it. I can’t thank them enough,” Emily said.

  Thankfully, Leggs is back on his legs, and is reportedly doing fine now, safe and warm with no injuries. “The horse is doing much better now,” Darlington Township Volunteer Fire Department wrote on Facebook. 

The fire officials were thanked for their hard work that saved the horse’s life. “We can not thank enough all the crews that responded today,” Thad Timmins wrote in a reply on Facebook. 

We’re so glad this horse is safe, warm and back on his feet, thanks to the hard work of these firefighters. It shows the amazing things that can happen when people work together to help animals.

Thanks to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(SPCA), the dog was transported via place to the JFK International Airport, and then to Tampa, where she’s about to meet her rescuer. 

The moment was live on TV, and their reunion was overwhelming. Nick Pierzchalski served as a black hawk pilot for over a year in Iraq. A bighearted guy, Nick always looked after his comrades. 

After all, even his job as a pilot is meant to bring the other soldiers to safety. But, meantime Nick found the time to look after other helpless creatures, also, like stray dogs. Even overseas, the brave pilot adopted a few month old dog, he was looking after. 

He and his fellow soldiers used to feed Airys – as Nick named the stray dog – with their own food. Later they built a dog house for her and even ordered some dog food for her. 

In return, the energetic dog kept the soldiers spirit up and she was a source of happiness for everyone in the camp. “She was a part of a pack of dogs, and she came running up to us after a crew came off the flight line,” Nick said. “We all had pets at home. Just to bring a little slice of home to us over there, it was the world to us.” 

The soldier rapidly grew fond of the dog he rescued, so he was decided to get her in the US. But he was aware it would not be any easy task, though. Thankfully, with the help of SPCA, after nearly a year, Nick and his beloved furry companion was about to reunite on American soil. 

“I didn’t think it was going to happen,” Nick said. “She’s part of the family now.”

The dramatic rescue was caught on camera and now the two are hailed as heroes all over the place. It was Daiton, 14, and his brother Rylen, 12 that saved the hopeless animals from certain fate. The two brothers and their dad, Dray McMillon, returned home from a family reunion. 

Since their property is surrounded by woods, the two boys often go to explore the area, and so they did on this occasion. 

But after a few minutes of walking through the forest, they came across a collapsed animal burrow. Fearing that a helpless animals could had been trapped inside, Daiton and Rylen rushed to investigate. Unfortunately, their fear came true, as a poor racoon got trapped inside. Unable to move, the tiny animal was scared and confused, so the boys knew they had to act quickly in order to save his life. 

They had no idea for how long the animal was trapped, so it was obvious for both of them that every second matters. Since they were very close to their home, they initially rushed to inform their dad.

When hearing the news, Dray grabbed a shovel and followed his boys. “They spotted a raccoon around 2 to 3 feet down in the hole. Only his head and front legs were exposed,” the dad explained to The Dodo. 

“The boys immediately called me and told me what they had found. When I arrived, the raccoon was gasping for air. It was very sad to see this animal struggle.” 

Without knowing the raccoon’s exact body position, the father-boys trio had to be extremely careful when digging around the animal, to not hurt him. 

The rescue proved tougher than they thought, and was getting dark, so they decided to call the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for help. The center immediately dispatched a volunteer at the scene, and together, they eventually managed to free the animal after several hours of intense rescue efforts. 

Once freed, the raccoon was taken to the Wild West Wildlife facility for investigation. Thankfully it was a very short visit, as he hasn’t suffered any injuries. 

So they released him back in the forest and the two boys couldn’t be happier! “I could see the sense of accomplishment in my boys,” the proud dad said.

Thankfully, the hilarious moment was caught on tape by director and photographer, Eric J Smith and it now went viral! The marine life enthusiasts were all patiently waiting in their boat with the cameras on, but they nearly missed the spectacular sight as the massive whale decided to trick them. 

The group was offshore Baja California in Mexico, waiting for a lifetime opportunity, but they were all looking the wrong way while the whale popped up its head behind them. The animal lovers got lucky though, as they turned their heads just in time to grab some adorable snaps with the magnificent creature. 

Just like it have known the curios sightseers missed the first opportunity, the humpback whale offered them other glimpse of it. 

This time, the moment was even celebrated by some of the whale watchers. Photographer Eric Smith, who witnessed the whole scene could not believe his eyes what he was seeing. 

“She slowly and silently stuck her head high above the water to look around,” the 49-year-old said. “When everyone turned around, she quickly sank below the surface. 

Cheering and hysterical laughter ensued. “I was in another panga [boat] a few dozen feet away and caught the moment right before everyone realized she was so close. Whale photography involves a lot of luck, but the key is to always be on alert and ready.”

There’s something in their protective instincts that makes them look after a young child. That was the case last month, after a mother dog was found with an abandoned newborn, helping to keep her warm in the freezing cold. 

According to SWNS, locals in the Chhattisgarh province of India found the newborn in a field after hearing her crying. She was apparently abandoned by her parents: The baby was naked and still had the umbilical cord attached. 

However, she wasn’t alone: the locals found her with a mother dog and her puppies, who were seemingly keeping the baby warm overnight by laying beside her. The bystanders concluded that the dog’s motherly instincts likely saved the child’s life during the overnight temperature drop. 

“It’s possibly the warmth from puppies and their mother itself who had kept this new born alive,” one anonymous local told SWNS. Officers arrived on the scene to handle the case, and the newborn, now named Akanksha, was taken to the hospital and examined by doctors. 

A criminal investigation is now ongoing to find the infant’s neglectful parents: “They are not parents, they are criminals,” a local named Premnath said. While it’s a heartbreaking situation, it’s still a miracle that the baby survived at all, thanks to this caring mother dog. 

What a miracle. Thank god this dog was there to keep this poor newborn warm and alive during the cold night.

So it is understandable that people have learned to love them, and with the idea of combining the best of both worlds, the wolf dog was born, since both belong to the Canis species. And if you see Yuki, you will not doubt that she is a wolf dog, one of the most “wolf” of the sanctuary she is in. 

“His DNA test says he is 87.5% grey wolf, 8.6% Siberian Husky and 3.9% German Shepherd,” said Brittany Allen, of the Shy Wolf Sanctuary.

The photo has attracted a lot of attention, something that was needed to tell the tragic and moving story of this majestic wolf-dog that received a second chance thanks to the Shy Wolf sanctuary. 

“We rescued him from a difficult situation. They bought him from a breeder, but realized he was too big to handle. They abandoned him in a shelter when he was only 8 months old to be put down. Then we came and provided him with a home, he’s been with us ever since.” Photo credit: Shy Wolf Sanctuary

At first he was very outgoing and we considered using him as an ambassador. But soon after he got a wound on his hind leg. He needed 5 operations to recover, and in that time Yuki became more aggressive especially when he was in a cage.” 

The volunteers at the sanctuary have been sharing photos of Yuki since 2012, and their impressions of her personality: “He loves women, showing off to visitors and fooling around.” “Yuki lets you know if he wants you in his compound or not. There’s a small group of women he lets in, and we call them his ‘harem’,” explained Judy, a volunteer who gained Yuki’s trust. The Shy Wolf Sanctuary Education & Experience Center was founded in 2001 by Nancy Smith, and provides sanctuary and rehabilitation for wild and captive-bred wolves and other exotic animals. 

This 2.5-acre property in Naples, Florida, is the permanent home to 60 animals each year. Its mission is to “reconnect people and animals through education,” so the staff and 30 active volunteers help the animals and educate people about the importance of protecting them. 

Wolf dogs are considered unsuitable for domestic animal services, so this sanctuary is literally their last chance to get help and find a home. “They are creatures that demand respect. It would be a very different encounter if it were in nature. The animals I work with have never lived in nature and never will, so they are more socialized. 

And we also give them the opportunity for a decent life, otherwise they would be sacrificed,” Brittany said. Most wolves stay away from people, without being aggressive, but wolf dogs are unique. They have a mixture of traits that makes their behavior less predictable than that of a wolf or a dog. 

So, by adopting them, they are a unique challenge and people are not aware of it. Especially if they are bought as pups, it is impossible to predict how much wolf there will be in the animal. “They’re harder in my opinion, because you don’t know exactly how much wolf and dog behavior they’ll have. Yuki is not necessarily more sociable than pure wolves. 

Both are social with the people they accept, but very selective. It applies to others too, when they accept you, the bond is unique.” “Today, Yuki is one of the most interesting animals in the sanctuary. It’s not easy to meet him, but he has made friends with some volunteers. 

We call him ‘Woowoo’ because it’s the noise he makes when he sees them, so they go and spend time with him,” said Jeremy Albrecht. After years of taking care of Yuki, the sanctuary received the sad news that he is suffering from blood cancer, although it is not noticeable at first sight. 

It seems that life continues to challenge Yuki, but we are sure that SWS is the right place for her to receive love, care and treatment.
