G’ma Shocked When Pit Bull Snaps At Grandkids, Then Realizes He Just Saved Their Life
Out of all the different breeds of dogs, pit bulls probably get the worst rap. People assume they will be violent and aggressive, but the truth is that many pit bulls are not this way at all. They can actually be very loyal and loving animals.
Melissa Butt already knew this, but after what happened earlier this month, she is more confident than ever in her dogs’ loyalty and love.
Melissa was working outside at her home in southwest Florida as her grandchildren, 4-year-old Zayden and 1 1/2-year-old Mallory, played. All of a sudden, the family’s dogs, Slayer and Paco, began barking at something in the grass.
Melissa tried to get the dogs to “disengage,” but they just began to grow more urgent. Her daughter, Cynthia, quickly took the kids inside, and that’s when Melissa saw it – a copperhead snake hidden in the grass.
As the dogs barked, the snake lashed out and bit them – Paco on the elbow and Slayer on the snout.
“That’s when Slayer grabbed the snake in his mouth and killed it,” Melissa said.
She hurriedly put the dogs in her car and rushed them to the vet, but their condition was getting so serious that the vet recommended they be taken to the BluePearl emergency vet in Brandon, Florida, about 40 minutes away.
Slayer’s face was swelling and his breathing had become labored. Melissa had to restrain herself from speeding the whole way to the hospital, worried that she would get pulled over or get into an accident while her dogs’ lives were in jeopardy.
When she finally got to the clinic, vets immediately gave the dogs antivenom treatments. Thankfully, they had made it there in time and both of the dogs survived.
Paco was well enough after one night in the hospital to go home, but Slayer’s face and mouth were still so swollen that he “could barely get his tongue out” to give Melissa a kiss when she came to visit him.
Thankfully, after another dose of antivenom and more love and care, Slayer was finally well enough to go home, though his face is still swollen and he is still on medication.
Melissa is so grateful to her dogs for putting their own lives at risk to save her grandkids and she’s making sure they know it!
“[The dogs are] very rightfully being very, very spoiled right now,” she said. “We spoiled them before. They’re ultraspoiled now.”
She doesn’t like to imagine what could have happened had the dogs not been there that day, and she knows how special they truly are.
“Our pets aren’t pets,” she said. “They are 100 percent family members; this just proves they deserve to be.”
Even little Zayden knows he has a protector and friend in these special dogs. When Slayer got home from the hospital, the 4-year-old turned to his grandmother and said, “Slayer protects me. Slayer protects us. He will always protect me.”
