And it looks like huskies tend to find their best companions in other species When Koda got lost in December, last year, his owner desperately tried to find her, but his attempts were all in vain. 

But when Rachel Howatt, the dog’s owner, lost any hope, the tricksy husky found its way back home, just like nothing ever happened. 

“We definitely searched for her, but in the end she just came back,” Howatt told The Dodo. “She is really smart, so I didn’t doubt she could find her way home.” Wondering where she could have been, Howatt decide to check on her neighbor trail camera. 

Just to make sure her Konda wasn’t spotted in the woods near their home in Manitoba, in Ontario, Canada. And the footages revealed something worthily of a Disney story. While missing, Koda was actually spending time with her newest friend, a wild deer. They were even eating and napping together. 

“It was quite something,” Howatt said. “Based on the time they spent on frame, it looked like they spent over 12 hours together. There’s also another photo where there’s two bucks in the picture with her.” Howatt said she’ll do her best to keep her beloved dog at home, but her attempts might be unsuccessful as Koda will definitely want to reunite with her friend. 

“Huskies have such a free spirit,” Howatt said. “It doesn’t surprise me at all that Koda was trying to make a new friend.” However, this isn’t the first time when a dog and a deer are making a great friendship.

The pair step out on the snow after spending the last few months in the den. Their beautiful moment of joy was captured on camera! Some adorable scenes at the Novosibirsk Zoo, one of the largest zoos in Russia. After becoming a mother for the second time, Gerda and her lovely baby get the chance to enjoy the snow for the first time together. 

While the patient mother had been through many winters, for the little cub is the first snow encounter. Needless to mention it loves it! In the first months after birth, polar bear cubs are extremely helpless, so they rely on their moms 100%. The mother and the cubs not even leave the den, until the little ones are strong enough. 

In this particular situation, the cub is already a few months old, so the stuff allowed it and its mom to get some fresh air. Although strong enough to play in the snow, the cub will still have to stay alongside its mom for a few more months. 

The cub’s dad, Kay is not allowed, yet, around the baby nor the mother. His reactions may be pretty unpredictable, so the staff take no risks. Cautious at first upon seeing so much snow, the curious cub immediately started to explore the surroundings. Under the supervision of its mom, of course!

 This is what she did when she saw a sick swan, which cost her a frantic journey of more than 23 miles on foot. 

 As reported by The New York Times, Ariel was planning to spend her 30th birthday evening at the Jamaica Bay wildlife refuge in Queens, New York. But then she ran into this bird that stood out from the rest of the animals. It was a female mute swan who appeared to be sick. She was sitting on the grass, alone, by the water’s edge. There she changed all her plans for the day and set to work. 

  “If there is an animal in need, I will do everything I can,” she said. There, she thought about how to get to Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where the appropriate animal rehabilitation center for such cases was located. Ariel, who spent five years as an animal care manager at the Wild Bird Fund rehabilitation center, knows how to spot a bird when it’s in bad condition. She spent several years rescuing geese in Central Park, red-tailed hawks in Brooklyn and other animals. 

 She confirmed her suspicions when she approached the bird, characterized by being very territorial and aggressive in such cases, and the bird did not act, but only tried to swim away with difficulty. 

She approached it, wrapped it in her jacket and took it with her.

“Well, I’m carrying a swan. I have no idea what to do. I guess I’ll just walk,” she said in her mind, as she walked back to her bike. And it wasn’t a normal thing to see someone walking around with a swan. 

 The hike back to her bike was very difficult since she was carrying the 17 pound bird. After that she called different animal shelters, but no one would help. Only a married couple took her and the swan to the Howard Beach subway station. 

So, she sat with the swan still wrapped in her coat on one of the seats. “Meanwhile, there are some people on the train and no one seems to be puzzled. (There was a man) sitting in front of me and he was just talking on the phone. I don’t even know if he noticed that there was a swan in front of him,” she said. She managed to meet with Tristan Higginbotham, an animal care manager for the Wild Bird Fund, at a station. They then drove to the Wild Bird Fund from there. 

Once at the rehabilitation center, they determined that the animal was underweight and showed symptoms of lead poisoning, which often occurs when they ingest different things they find.

Ariel was very happy to have helped the swan. “That was the perfect culmination of my 20s. It was the perfect birthday gift to be out in nature and be able to save a life,” she said.

 Recently, one zoo had extra reason to celebrate: not only did they see the birth of an adorable newborn western lowland gorilla, but it was the first born at the zoo in their 139-year history.

  The baby gorilla, a male, was born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on October 26 to 23-year-old mom Nneka and 34-year-old dad Mokolo, according to a press release from the zoo. 

 While the mom did not show “appropriate maternal care,” the baby gorilla was instinctively cared for by Fredrika, a mother of four and the eldest female in the troop.

 

“Over the past several days, Freddy has been bringing the newborn to be bottle fed by Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s animal care team,” the zoo wrote. 

  “The team worked with the gorillas using positive reinforcement training techniques, through a protective barrier, to facilitate cooperative participation in the supplemental feeding of the infant. The technique allows the infant to stay with the gorilla family at all times to allow proper physical development.” 

 The zoo has been home to many gorillas over the years, and is considered an “international leader in gorilla research,” but this is reportedly the first time a newborn has arrived at the zoo. 

  “We’re thrilled to announce the birth of this gorilla, the first in our history, as we also look ahead towards the future at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo,” said Cleveland Metroparks CEO Brian M. Zimmerman.

  The western lowland gorilla is a critically endangered species, threatened in the wild by illegal hunting and habitat loss due to deforestation, and in-captivity breeding programs like this can go a long way in helping a species repopulate. 

 According to their press release, the zoo helped spearhead the Gorilla Species Survival Plan and work closely with Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.

  Every new birth is a great step forward for this at-risk species, ensuring that the western lowland gorilla will be around for generations to come. 

Plus, this adorable newborn will be sure to delight visitors to the zoo, hopefully inspiring them to get involved with the conservation effort. 

 The zoo announced plans to get the public involved, including an opportunity to help name the baby. They also said they will continue to post videos and updates about the gorilla’s development.
