She was taken into the caring hands of bat conservationist Denise Wade, and she is set to make a complete recovery without significant injuries suffered. She even managed to look cute as hell in the aftermath, if you haven’t realized. 

 When tiny Miss Alicia was recovering, swaddled in a comfy blue towel, Wade too} a video of her feeding time. 

Given the fact that flying foxes possess a common sweet tooth (their food intake is made up mainly of fruit and nectar), you can imagine the way Alicia reacted when a fresh banana was offered to her.

 This year we combined toy donations from our staff and amazing supporters, lined them up and let the dogs in our Rehoming Centre pick their own Christmas present. 

As you will see, deciding on which toy was a big decision for some dogs and some delighted in the squeakiest toy they could find – you’ll need sound on to appreciate their joy in full effect.

With outstretched wings and a striking bird-shaped profile, the image – captured by photographer Hallgrimur P Helgason – wowed stargazers in Kaldarsel. Mr Helgason, 64, said that the bird showed up in the night sky an hour after he got there and started snapping. 

He said: ‘It’s really a thrill shooting the aurora, especially when they are so playful like they were that night. I have to admit that I always get an adrenalin kick when the lights burst out like that – that particular shot was the top one of the night.’ 

He uses a camera and tripod to photograph the lights, and advises snapping in the dark away from city light pollution and never using a flash. 

 He said the Northern Lights were mainly showing in green and yellow colors when he was shooting that night but also sported red and blue, suggesting the aurora was strong. The Northern Lights feature prominently in Norse mythology. One legend suggests that the lights were reflections or glow from the shields and armour of the Valkyrie, female warriors who would choose who may die in battle and who may live to fight another day. 

Dying in battle seemed to occupy Norse mythology quite a bit and the Aurora was also believed to be “Bifrost Bridge”, a glowing and pulsating arch which led those fallen in battle to the warriors final resting place in Valhalla. Saami indigenous people believe these lights are their ancestors visiting them. The Salteaus Indians of eastern Canada and the Kwakiutl and Tlingit of Southeastern Alaska interpreted the northern lights as the dancing of human spirits. 

The Inuits who lived on the lower Yukon River believed that the aurora was the dance of animal spirits, especially those of deer, wolf, seals, salmon and beluga. 

In Finland, a mystical fox was thought to have created the aurora, its bushy tail spraying snow and throwing sparks into the sky. Source

Fishermen rescued two drowning wild brown bear cubs in a Russian lake with video footage showing the remarkable affinity between beast and man. 

The heart-warming film and pictures highlight how the frightened bears placed their total faith in the tourists in a boat on Lake Vygozero in the Karelia region of northern Russia. In the footage, thought to have been taken last month, the wild animals had lost their mother crossing the lake after she overestimated their swimming abilities. 

The eyes and expressions of one of the bears showed utter fear and desperation, instinctively knowing only the fishermen could save them. 

Ruslan Lukanin, from Moscow, said: 

'We picked them up and dragged them to the island to which their mother had swum. 'It was dangerous, of course. 'But they are living creatures. 'We couldn't just look the other way.' Extraordinary images show the light-faced cub seemingly pleading the fishermen to save it, with the tourists wanting to help but conscious that they were rescuing wild animals that could also attack them.

The men took them to one of 500-plus islands on the lake - where their mother had swum, evidently unaware of the desperate plight of her offspring. Ready to drop, the cubs had to be helped into the forest. 'They were too weak to walk by themselves,' said one of the fishermen. 

They took the bears into the trees hoping that their neglectful mother would find them and help them recover. VIDEO
