Unconditional love: Loyal dog refuses to leave mom’s side after saving her life

Dogs are, without question, the most loyal creatures on Earth. And this unconditional love and loyalty is proved once again by a photo that recently won the internet – a service dog refusing to leave her mom’s hospital room.

But this special connection started when Shauna Darcy decided a dog would help her in her endless fight with anxiety. And she wasn’t wrong at all. Because, with Ruby there was love at first sight. And the lovely pup has proved to be more than a service dog.

Without realizing, when Shauna got Ruby, she won a friend. A true one!

“While she was training to be a service dog I noticed that she started picking up on changes in my heart rate and would act funny,” Shauna told the Dodo.

“For example, paw at me, try to get my attention, get on top of me [and other stuff like that].”

In other terms, Ruby is more like a guardian angel for Shauna. She’s there for her adoptive mom, every single moment. And her daily routine includes monitoring Shauna’s blood pressure and heart rate, given that she also suffer of a rare heart condition called vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

More than that, this special also helps her human companion during her panic attacks, she carries groceries or picks dropped items.

“When I pass out she gets on top of me and applies all her pressure on me and licks my hands and face until I come around,” the young woman said.

A few days ago, Ruby saved her mom’s life. She started to alert Shauna that’s something wrong. And even though the young woman was feeling good she chose to trust Ruby’s instincts and called an ambulance.

“It turns out my heart was going into atrial fibrillation,” she said. “By the time the paramedics came, I was in pain and barely conscious.”

Thanks to her loyal and special dog, Shauna is able to breath again. But Ruby’s loyalty doesn’t stop her. She refused to leave her mom’s side while in hospital.

Shauna is sure it was that special bond between her and Ruby what actually saved her life. “I wouldn’t be alive without her,” she said.

Young Girl Leaves City Comfort To Live In The Wilderness With Her Huskies

Hidden in the heart of the Finnish wilderness, is a determined young woman who traded city life for an existence of near solitude with 85 huskies for company.

Not many people would be up to the challenge of braving temperatures that hit -45°C but they aren't Tinja Myllykangas who values her privileged interaction with nature over material goods.

Tinja lives without electricity, relying on a wood stove for heat and candles for light and she allowed photographer Brice Portolano to spend two weeks with her capturing her unique way of life. The strong-willed blonde decided to leave behind her biological studies in the city of Jyväskylä, Finland, for the Arctic landscapes of Lapland, in 2008.

She yearned for the untouched wilderness that she had on her doorstep rather urban life because she grew up surrounded by animals. And so she embarked on finding a spot to raise sledding dogs, eventually settling down near to the Muotkatunturi nature reserve - 180 miles from the closest town. Tinja cultivates a strong relationship with the dogs, who she said need a lot of exercise.

Part of strengthening her bond with them is getting to know each pack member individually. She also keeps horses and dog wolfs, canines where one of their parents or grandparents was a wolf. According to Tinja, the breed are extremely faithful and follow her wherever she goes.

She told Portolano: 'I like being on my own with the dogs and horses. I think being alone is the most peaceful way of life there is.'

Chores never feel like a burden for Tinja, who said she doesn't feel the need for material possessions and is energised by the beauty of nature around her.

Tinja's wooden home is devoid of running water and food is cooked outside on an open fire or on the wood stove.

But according to the French photographer, the hardest thing about Tinja's life is not necessarily the conditions or harsh temperatures, but the absence of daylight, which can last for over a month.
