Normally the father would take care of the babies by hunting and gathering food, but with no father in sight, the woman has become sort of a surrogate parent. How precious is this?

For the McCraw family, the arrival of a new rescue dog brought a semblance of solace following the death of their cherished dog, Mischka, who succumbed to cancer. Their sorrow was profound. During their period of mourning, Maggie entered their lives, compelling them to make her part of their family. Arranged by Halfway There Rescue, the family’s initial meeting with Maggie in South Carolina was deeply moving. Mary and her husband, Mark, felt an instant connection with Maggie, charmed by her affections during their first encounter, as if destiny had brought them together. 

Maggie, throughout the meeting, clung to Mark, expressing her gratitude for being rescued. She jumped up and down, giving him the sweetest hugs, showing her gratitude. Learning of Maggie’s past abuse and exploitation for breeding by her former owners before being abandoned, the McCraws were deeply distressed. Before joining the McCraws, Maggie had been under the care of Andra Mack in a foster home, where she gradually regained her trust in humans. Now ready for a permanent home, the McCraws eagerly welcomed her to South Carolina, promising her a loving fresh start. 

This story serves as a testament to the kindness of those willing to open their hearts to a dog in dire need of love and protection.   Born from rare c-section 

Jameela was born at Texas’ Fort Worth Zoo to 33-year-old western lowland gorilla Sekani. It was a routine pregnancy and Sekani wasn’t expected to give birth until February, but on January 3 she began exhibiting unusual symptoms. 

After medical tests, she was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a serious blood-pressure condition. The zoo realized the lives of both the mom and baby were in danger, and decided an emergency c-section. C-sections, in which the baby is delivered through an incision in the mother’s abdomen, are fairly common in human births but rarely performed on gorillas. But given our reproductive biological similarities, the procedure is much the same. 

The zoo consulted with Dr. Jamie Walker Erwin, a local obstetrician and gynecologist, who assembled a team of experts for the surgery. The c-section was a success, but because Jameela was born 4-6 weeks premature they had to act fast to save her life, providing resuscitation, stabilization and respiratory support. 

Rejected by birth mother 

Over the next few weeks, she received round-the-clock care and the baby gorilla’s health eventually stabilized. The newborn was given the name Jameela, which means “beautiful” in Swahili and is also a tribute to Dr. Jamie Erwin. Sekani also recovered from the procedure. However, the team soon faced another hurdle: when they attempted to reunite the mother and child, Sekani showed no interest in caring for her baby, likely because she never experienced the necessary hormonal cues that would’ve come from a natural birth. After two weeks of unsuccessful attempts, they attempted to introduce Jameela to another female gorilla at the zoo, Gracie, hoping she would accept the baby as a surrogate. 

However, this also proved to be unsuccessful. A decision was then made to transfer Jameela to a different zoo where she may be adopted by a female gorilla. Last week, she was flown to her new home at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. 

“Our main goal has always been that Jameela is raised by gorillas,” Mike Fouraker, executive director of the Fort Worth Zoo, said in a press release. “We have been in contact with the team at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and are hopeful that our ultimate goal will be met. The transfer has proven to be successful. “The introductions here have gone really well. The troop here seems receptive to her presence,” Fort Worth Zoo primary gorilla keeper Angie Holmes said in a video. 

“Our intial intro process has been really great. We’ve had interest from multiple gorillas,” said said Brian Price, gorilla keeper at Cleveland Metroparks. “Fredricka, who is our proven surrogate, came over and had some really good interactions with Jameela. She made some vocalizations.”

In an update, the zoo confirmed that Fredricka, aka Freddy, has been successfully bonding with Jameela and appears to have adopted the little one as a surrogate. “Freddy immediately went in and picked her up. It was the biggest sigh of relief,” Laura Klutts, associate animal curator at the zoo, said in a video. “That was the first time Jameela was able to be picked up properly by a female gorilla.” “Now that we’ve kind of hit that next box that we need to see, we can move forward with what that looks like with what our gorillas say they’re ready for.” “That is exactly what we were hoping to see,” animal curator Elena Less said.

Jameela’s first weeks of life have been quite dramatic and filled with complications, but it seems that she’s finally in good hands. “To see what that looks like in a successful way, it brought tears to my eyes,” said Angie Holmes.

After hearing the boy’s story, many people in the community were touched. Since the boy lives in a small town, getting back on his feet will be tricky. But many individuals have offered support to the boy and his dog if he’s willing to accept help. Doing the Responsible Thing 

The boy and his dog were living under a bridge in Senatobia, Mississippi. The dog named Jada is a four-month-old Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix who had been with the boy since she was a tiny pup. The two have a strong bond, but the boy gave her up to the Senatobia-Tate County Animal Shelter because he couldn’t care for her. He walked Jada all the way to the shelter and gave them a garbage bag filled with her food and blanket. 

Even though the shelter was at capacity, they knew they couldn’t say no. They kept Jada in the main area of the facility, but she became miserable as soon as her human left. “My heart broke for him. He was clearly saddened by having to bring his dog up here,” Shelter Director Kris Robinson said. “She was kind of clinging to him around his legs. Every time he would move, she would move. She has bonded with him.” After the boy left, Jada plopped on the ground and moped. Someone at the shelter took a photo of her lying there beside the garbage bag with her stuff. They shared the image on social media, and people instantly felt heartbroken for Jada and the boy. 

 Community Steps Up 

Someone will foster Jada while law enforcement looks into the situation. Ever since the shelter mentioned the boy’s predicament on Facebook, several people have offered help. Some people claimed they could house him and his dog, and others were willing to help him find a job. A local church also offers temporary shelter and food to those who need it. 

Currently, the shelter has been unable to reach the boy, but he has several options for assistance if he’s willing to take it. Robinson believes his decision to surrender Jada was very intelligent. He could’ve easily abandoned the dog, but he went out of his way to keep his four-legged family member safe.

“I think that boy has a lot more integrity than a lot of people around here who dump animals and puppies when they can’t take care of them,” Robinson said. 

The shelter said they will update followers if they hear from the boy or gain more information. But for the time being, Jada will be receiving the best care possible. Hopefully, she and her human will be reunited soon.

 From the start, Reeves was apprehensive about his chances of winning. "I'm so terrible with this," he said, groaning. "I just know it's going to be a disaster!"

He needn't have worried, though, because with a little bit of deductive reasoning — and some prompting from Pup Quiz host Steve Higgins — Reeves nailed his first question and soon had one very adorable puppy joining him in his comfy recliner. 

"That's unfair!" Fallon shouted at Higgins' interference. "First of all, I'm not taking a puppy away from John Wick. Just saying that right now." Which wasn't a lie, because the late-night host then proceeded to whiff his question, making Reeves the temporary owner of two dogs who proceeded to excitedly paw at and lick his face. 

The Matrix actor then doubled the number of dogs in his lap during Double Puppardy by correctly identifying a dik-dik as a species of antelope. "Let's go, Fallon!" Reeves cheered with four happy-go-lucky puppies sitting on him. "It's puppy love!" When one dog raced over to greet Reeves' puppy-less competitor, the actor indignantly shouted, "That's my puppy, Fallon!" Another failed question by Fallon led a joyous Reeves to become almost entirely eclipsed by golden retrievers in his chair. "Who's the puppy king?" He yelled. "I'm the puppy king!" When it came time for Final Puppardy, Reeves had so many dogs that he struggled to write in his final answer… which just so happened to be the correct one, securing his title as Puppy King. 

Chaos soon broke loose on the stage as the dogs attempted to make their great escape at the end of the segment, but the ones who stuck by Reeves' side were awarded with some loving head pats. "How's it going?" the actor asked one contently munching on his tie.

Not stopping there, Marshall even employed his nose in a clever maneuver to ring the doorbell, which emits a knocking sound, repeatedly hoping to catch the attention of his family inside. 

This entire sequence of events, from the initial escape to the comedic realization of his mistake and subsequent efforts to re-enter the house, was fortuitously captured by the family’s surveillance camera. The footage stands as a humorous and heartwarming testament to Marshall’s brief journey of independence and his swift conclusion that home, after all, is where the heart is. This incident delightfully illustrates the sometimes comical lengths to which our pets will go when faced with the consequences of their curiosity. After his brief escape, Marshall was allowed back inside by someone, likely teaching him a valuable lesson about the grass not always being greener on the other side. His owner, Greg Basel, shared the video of Marshall’s escapade, providing a light-hearted moment for all to enjoy. It’s hoped that Marshall has curbed his wandering ways after this adventure.

A Facebook post from the Missouri Department of Conservation detailed the event, where the Missouri Stream Teams, Beyond Housing, and local community members were assessing sites for a cleanup project and stumbled upon an unforeseen discovery amidst the debris.

  Encased within a black plastic garbage bag amidst the refuse, a small puppy had been left, an act of cruelty that was fortunately intercepted in time by the compassionate individuals. The encounter was serendipitous, affirming the belief that animals find us when it’s meant to be. 

Among the crew, one individual, Stream Team Coordinator Brian Waldrop, was especially touched by the plight of the puppy found in such a dire situation. Recounting the experience to FOX 2 St. Louis, Brian expressed immediate affection for the puppy, “I was just down on my knees, picked him up, and fell instantly in love,” he shared. For Brian, encountering a dog in such a manner was a first. 

Despite the unusual circumstances of their meeting, he felt an immediate connection and made the decision to adopt the puppy himself, believing it was fate.

Once home, a bath transformed the puppy from a seemingly yellow to a pristine white coat, showcasing the puppy’s endearing nature and soft fur, as described by Brian to FOX 2. 

While still contemplating a name for the dog, with suggestions like “Hefty” being floated around due to the circumstances of their meeting in the Hefty trash bag, Brian has affectionately been calling him “Dude.” Thanks to the clean-up crew and Brian’s willingness to provide a forever home to the puppy, this story ended happily!

“Growing up, I was not very ‘girly’ and hadn’t ever dreamt of a wedding like most little girls did, but I had dreamed of Bear being a part of my wedding, in a little red wagon, since I could remember,” Cat told The Dodo. 

She met her husband Jimmy in 2011, and Bear remained an important part of both of their lives. So as they were preparing to say “I do,” they knew they had to fulfill Cat’s longtime dream and have Bear be part of the ceremony. 

But Bear has been getting up in years, and the now-17-year-old dog has suffered some health problems lately. And just before the couple were scheduled to get married last month, Bear was hospitalized due to kidney disease. Just when it seemed that Bear would not be able to attend their wedding, the couple made a heartwarming change of plans. 

“I asked Jimmy if he thought we should get married at the vet to ensure Bear would be there with us,” Cat told The Dodo. “His response was, ‘I’d marry you any day, any time.’”

The couple ended up exchanging vows at VCA Veterinary Emergency Service & Veterinary Specialty Center, where Bear was being treated. According to a post from the vet’s office, they held a ceremony in a waiting area with family and friends in attendance. Photos shared by the vet’s office give a glimpse of the sweet ceremony: Bear, still a little groggy due to his medical treatments, rests in a red wagon, just like Cat always dreamed of. The back of the wagon says “I loved her first.” 

Photos also show Cat’s tattoo honoring Bear, which says “You’ll be with me wherever I go” over a paw print — a sentiment proven true on her wedding day. Thankfully, Bear was discharged from the vets office two days after the ceremony. 

The vet’s office said that Bear was now “home getting all the love and snuggles from his favorite (newlywed) people.” It also meant that the couple was able to go ahead with their originally-scheduled wedding ceremony, with Bear by their side, along with the couple’s other dogs.

  The couple told The Dodo that Bear’s health has since taken another unfortunate turn, but they are doing their best to get his health back on track. They also said that despite his ailing health, he seemed to perk up on their wedding day. 

“Following the ceremony, Bear actually got up and walked around outside, which he hadn’t done in days, and he walked a lot!” Dogs are such an important part of our lives, and many people want their beloved pets with them on their big day — we’re so glad this couple got to get married with Bear by their side ❤️

Despite the scars of her trauma, Lotus’s infectious smile and enthusiastically wagging tail are irresistible, captivating everyone she encounters. Her ability to find happiness and love after such a harrowing experience has not only endeared her to her new family but has also made her a source of inspiration. 

Lotus’s story underscores the resilience inherent in all beings and serves as a reminder of the transformative power of compassion and empathy. Through her journey, Lotus teaches us about the strength required to overcome adversity and the joy that awaits on the other side of pain. This incredible dog, used for breeding, was found after a house fire. It’s hard to imagine how an animal who had been through such a harrowing experience could still manage to smile through the pain. But that’s exactly what she did, capturing the hearts of everyone who saw her. When Lotus was first brought to her new home, she wasn’t fearful. Instead, she seemed to be looking for a place to rest her head. For the first couple of months, she didn’t leave the house due to her injuries. It was during this time that she formed a strong bond with her new mama, Kristen. As she began to heal, she was finally able to venture outside and explore her new surroundings. 

One of the most endearing things about Lotus is that she lies in the middle of the sidewalk, waiting for someone to come by and pet her. It was clear that she craved love and attention. The first time Kristen saw Lotus truly excited and mobile was when she discovered her love for a pink piggy toy. She would proudly carry her piggy toy around in her mouth, wagging her tail and showing off her newfound happiness. The toy was so special to her. It was as if they were soulmates! To celebrate her love for the piggy toy, her mom set up a surprise in the hallway: an array of piggy toys of different sizes for her to choose from. The sight of so many toys seemed to overwhelm her at first, but it was clear that she was in her element. Now, she has enough inspirational toys to last her a lifetime. Lotus has become an inspiration to all who meet her. Her story teaches us that through love and motivation, healing is possible! She may be scarred on the outside, but her heart is flawless! Despite her trauma, Lotus has found her bliss with her new mom. Her infectious smile and tail wags say it all!

  Natalie has seen her share of strays over the years, and she knows an abused dog when she sees one. And this one was definitely traumatized. An organization called the Redland Rock Pit Abandoned Dog Project visits the area every day to feed the strays. But there are more homeless dogs there than any one organization can help. Furever Bully Love Rescue teamed up with Redland Rock Pit earlier in the year to raise some money for the cause and to help rescue dogs in the area. It was an experience Natalie would never forget. It was the day she would meet a one-year-old hound mix named Harper. Volunteers put out food, and that’s when Harper appeared with four or five other dogs. She fell to the ground in fear. The dog was covered in scars and terrified of humans. There was no way they were going to leave her. But the dog wouldn’t move… They were even able to slip a leash around her neck, but she refused to get up. So they picked her up and went with a blanket on the floor of the vehicle instead of a crate. When the volunteers arrived back in Orlando, Harper was treated for anemia, worms, and a tooth infection. But healing her soul would take a lot longer. Harper didn’t stand up for three days. And anytime someone picked her up, she’d cling to them and not let go. Harper’s past obviously took a huge toll on the poor dog. Harper went straight to foster care with a woman named Cheryl Kessler. After just a few weeks, she’d already seen a huge change in the dog. She’s been getting better every day and really coming out of her shell. Harper’s acting much like a normal dog running around and doing donuts in the backyard. 🙂

According to a Facebook post from the Missouri Department of Conservation, a crew consisting of Missouri Stream Teams, Beyond Housing and citizens from a Tiered Community were scouting locations for a clean-up on March 19, when they came across something unexpected in the trash. 

A tiny puppy had been abandoned in the trash pile, tied up in a black plastic garbage bag. It was heartbreaking that anyone would leave a dog for dead like this, but a miracle he was discovered in time.

  One member of the crew was particularly struck by the abandoned pup: Stream Team Coordinator Brian Waldrop. “I was just down on my knees, picked it up, and fell instantly in love,” Brian recalled to FOX 2 St. Louis. It was the first time he had come across a dog in a trash pile. 

While their meeting was unexpected and unusual, Brian knew it was meant to be and agreed to take the puppy home himself for good! He says he gave the dog a wash when they got home: the dog’s initial yellow coloring faded away to reveal a beautiful white coat. “He is just… what a great personality, and he is so soft,” Brian said. 

Brian told FOX 2 that he hadn’t settled on a name for the dog. While some have suggested garbage-themed names like “Hefty,” he has been calling him “Dude.”

  It’s heartbreaking that anyone would abandon a puppy like this, but we’re so glad everything worked out and he has a great, loving new home! Thank you to Brian for taking this pup in!

The little pup appeared desperate and scared. He jumped up and down on the man’s car door repeatedly, like he was trying to reach the door handle. The man finally got out and looked around for the dog’s owner. But he was all alone. The guy saw an employee from one of the stores in the shopping center and asked her if she knew who the dog belonged to. She told the gentleman that she had seen the dog before. He had been seen running around the parking lot, on and off for about six months. 

Oddly, he chooses white cars and tries to get inside them by jumping on the doors. The man didn’t understand, and the woman could tell he was perplexed. She further explained that the rumor was that his previous owner had driven a white car and left him in the parking lot. The dog, now a stray, found shelter nearby and would come back to the parking lot to find his owner whenever he could. The man’s heart broke! He had to take this poor dog home and give him a proper life. It was obvious he was unwanted and was dumped in the cruelest fashion. It was time to show him kindness and love. He put the dog in his car and drove home. 

Once inside, he gave the pup a warm bath, blow-dried him, and gave him a hearty meal. The pup was elated! The dog, who had seen the worst in humanity, was about to see the best! His new dad vowed to never let him go a single day without feeling loved.

  The crow will come and visit all of them, including the dog and the cats, but it’s for the little boy Otto whom Russell reserves the vast majority of his love, and their friendship is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Russell is no caged corvid. He disappears from the family’s property in Denmark often. 

However, whether it’s pecking at the door, flying through the window onto the couch, or waiting for Otto on top of the house when he gets home from Kindergarten, the bird is never far away. 

Rescued as a juvenile, Otto’s mom and dad were not able to find anyone in the area to rehabilitate him, and while nursing him back to health, and then on to the days of his fledging, the crow grew to trust the family. He’s been with the family awhile now, and has been part of welcoming the couple’s second child, Hedwig, into the world, though too often he tries to steal the baby’s pacifier.
