This Butterfly’s Wing Markings Look Like The Good Luck Number 88

When filming takes place at picturesque locations like Tatama National Park in the rainforest of Colombia, the most wonderful things can happen.

While at that park, wildlife photographers Thomas Marent and David Weiller captured incredible footage of a stunning and unique butterfly.

The butterfly’s wings have clear markings that look like the number 88, a significant number for luck.
You see, the number 88 is a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture.

In fact, according to Tutorming, “8 is the luckiest number in Chinese culture because 八 sounds like 發 (fa), which means ‘wealth’, ‘fortune’, and ‘prosper’ in Chinese. Multiples of eight are even better, as 88 bears a resemblance to 囍 (shuāng xǐ), or ‘double happiness’.”

The butterfly captured in the video below is known as a Diaethria anna, also called an Anna’s Eighty-Eight butterfly.

As the common name implies, the Anna’s Eighty-Eight butterflies do have markings on their wings that resemble the number 88.
However, unlike with the butterfly below, many of the markings are not very clear or don’t perfectly resemble the lucky number.

According to iNaturalist, the Diaethria anna is native to wet regions in Middle America.
