Pink dolphins may seem like nothing more than a myth, but we assure you, they are very real — and some even live in the United States!

A number of dolphins can be found in the waters of southern Louisiana, near the Lake Charles region. Calcasieu River and the lake of the same name are just south of Lake Charles, and feed into the Gulf of Mexico.

The Calcasieu Ship Channel is known for offering glimpses of the rare and beautiful pink dolphins, and is popular with both locals and tourists. This group of boaters were floored to see not only a pink dolphin, but a pink baby calf as well on a trip out on the water.

Where does their pink color come from? Some scientists say that pink dolphins are actually albino, and that their pink color stems from their unique cellular structure. Because of this lack of pigment in their skin, their blood vessels are actually visible through the surface, giving them a rosy hue.

The mama dolphin they spotted has been dubbed “Pinky” because of her pretty color. Locals say that the dolphin has been around since at least 2007.

Erik Rue, who works as a local charter boat captain in the area, was the first to report a sighting of Pinky several years ago.

He said that the dolphin swam very close to his boat. At one point, she was only ten feet away from him. He snapped some pictures of the unusual dolphin and of her pod.


When seeing a pink dolphin, you may automatically assume it’s female because it’s, well, pink. We don’t need to tell you that that logic is flawed — but we will anyway. Pink coloring does not mean a creature is female. There are plenty of pink creatures that exist in our world that are male (like flamingos).

Erik was certain that Pinky was a female though. He observed her during mating season and took pictures to prove his point.

“I know I’m the first one to take pictures of her,” he said.


Naturally, seeing a pink dolphin made folks wonder if she would have pink calves. Well, Bridget Boudreaux claims to have found out for certain: she says that she saw Pinky with a pink calf out on the water.

She and her husband visited the channel and recorded some video. However, they couldn’t get any footage of the baby and mama together. Still, she submitted the video she took to the local news.

Kaziranga National Park is an incredible story of conservation success.

Kaziranga National Park is a story of success when it comes to conservation of rhinos – but what they’ve done to achieve it is allowing its workers to shoot and even kill potential poachers. So far, the park has killed 50 poachers.


Rhinos are safe there – a century ago, there was only a handful of Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Now, the park hosts more than 2,400, which is two-thirds of the world’s population.

However, little is talked about the fact that in 2015, more people were shot dead by park guards then the number of rhinos killed by poachers.

These people all went after rhino horn, as they could be sold for as much as $6,000 for 100g and are considerably more expensive than gold. They are mostly marketed as a miracle cure for everything from cancer to erectile dysfunction.

"The instruction is whenever you see the poachers or hunters, we should start our guns and hunt them," Avdesh explains without hesitation.

Conservation efforts in India tend to focus on protecting a few emblematic species. The fight to preserve them is stacked high with patriotic sentiment. Rhinos and tigers have become potent national symbols.

For the first time in roughly 150 years, a bison has been born on the land at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

The female bison was born Wednesday, the first from the herd Wanuskewin welcomed in December, which has genetic links to the Yellowstone herd. According to Wanuskewin officials, the occasion marks the first bison born on their ancestral land since before the 1876 signing of Treaty Six and the local extinction of the species.


Wanuskewin CEO Darlene Brander said the birth is “a historic moment in Wanuskewin’s timeline.”

She said Indigenous elders had been trying to bring bison back to the park for 40 years and “there was a lot of joy going on” when they learned of the birth.

“We have been waiting for this day at Wanuskewin for a very long time,” she said.

“When you take in the COVID-19 pandemic and all the implications of it and how it impacted our lives, to hear about this ray of hope through the baby bison being born at the park, it was incredibly significant.”


Felix Thomas, the Wanuskewin board chair and co-chair of the Thundering Ahead capital campaign, said every birth “is part of the circle of life and signals progress.”

More baby bison are expected in the spring, though Brander would not say how many. One of the things elders have taught her is to not count her eggs before they hatch, she said.

Wanuskewain welcomed 11 Plains bison to the park in December. Six calves came from Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan and five animals — a bull and four pregnant cows — came from a ranch in South Dakota.

Because of restrictions in place around COVID-19, Wanuskewin is closed to the public. Brander said even if the park were open, people would be asked to give the bison space.

The Dwarf Kingfisher Fledgling bird has eluded scientists for over 130-years.

The South Philippine Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx mindanensis) was first described 130-years ago during the Steere Expedition to the Philippines in 1890. The bird is the smallest of the Kingfisher species and has long been known for its incredible plumage of metallic lilac, orange, and bright blue spots.


It is found in the virgin and second-growth forests in the islands of Mindanao and Basilan. The South Philippine Dwarf Kingfisher has a unique call, described as a “high-pitched, insect-like, and almost inaudible zeeep.”

It has eluded scientists for over a hundred years because of its behavior. It is difficult to see as it perches quietly and darts invisibly from perch to perch.


But thanks to Miguel David De Leon, a Filipino field biologist and director of the Robert S. Kennedy Bird Conservancy, we get a glimpse of the beautiful bird that is sadly threatened with extinction.


“The Robert S. Kennedy Bird Conservancy is a group of eight field workers and bird photographers that documents birds and habitats, contributing data previously unknown to science, with the ultimate goal of conserving species and ecosystems,” says De Leon in an interview with Esquire Philippines.

All of these photos of the bird’s fledgling taken by De Leon were the very first time this stunning creature has ever been photographed.

The photos are results of De Leon and his team’s 10 years of laborious tracking and research in an attempt to document for the first time the nesting, feeding, and breeding behaviors of the South Philippine Dwarf Kingfisher.
